Objective
Deploying a LPWAN (LoRaWAN & Sigfox) infrastructure in
campuses via Janet network, making a strong IoT
ecosystem and testbed for students, researchers and staff
to explore potential benefits of LPWAN technologies in
different areas;

LoRaWAN Academy gives universities and students the
tools to successfully teach or learn about LoRaTechnology
and the LoRaWAN™ open specification for IoT.The program
provides the necessary building blocks to boost your
engineering curriculum or resume, design and prototype IoT
applications, and make our planet smart!
Jisc’s IoT Program
»Providing a dedicated IoT platform for education community by
hosting a Network Server in the Janet network and portal;
»Providing 10xLoRaWAN gateways, in collaboration with Digital
Catapult , in a long-term loan basis*;
»Offering up to £10K fund to up to four best challenges (subject to
conforming to Jisc criteria)
*: subject toT&Cs

Scope of idea
Any (not necessarily new) idea that could improve:
»Teaching
»Learning
»Campus operation
»Student’s experience
» How a university or college plays a role in enhancing citizens' quality of life
21/02/2019
But remember that LoRaWAN is
• Not for large data payloads,
• Not for continuous monitoring (except Class C devices).
• Not ideal candidate for real time applications requiring lower latency and
bounded jitter requirements

Your Commitments
21/02/2019
T&Cs including:
»Permanent installation of the GW;
»Raising awareness about possibility of using
it among students and staff;
»Supporting Jisc and Digital Catapult activities
to drive the innovation and adoption of
LPWAN;
Eligibility Criteria for the grant funding
» Any data generated at the application level during pilot is shared with Jisc;
» The proposed solution has a real possibility of being scalable &
repeatable;
» The proposed cost & time estimations are viable;
» Your project team includes at least one person from your organisation’s IT
Department;
» Your proposal is sponsored by a senior manager within your organisation;
» The outcomes of the project can be shared with the Jisc community;
» The project team attends at least 2 project review meetings with Jisc -
one half way through the pilot and one at the end.
» In addition, Jisc grant funding is subject to agreement of our standard grant funding terms and conditions, available at:
http://repository.jisc.ac.uk/7099/1/Jisc_terms_and_condtions_of_grant_(project)_v2.3.pdf
BeforeYou Start
»Identify all stakeholders and involve them from day 1;
»Put together RACI matrix;
»IF POSSIBLE try to be as specific as possible with your
requirements (BW requirement, security requirement,
delay, etc.);
»Start recording all the information about the current
state.This makes a comparison much easier;
»Define your KPIs;
