This sermon launches the Worship Series called CORE. We spend eight weeks looking at the core elements of our faith as followers of Jesus, specifically within a Lutheran framework. This sermon asks, "Why Jesus?" We need Jesus to both see God, and to know God. The texts are Galatians 2:16-21 and Luke 24:44-48.
19. And this is eternal life, that they may know you,
the only true God, and Jesus Christ
whom you have sent.
John 17:3
Editor's Notes
Use my tricky intro to Jesus as a radical Jewish teacher.
This is the central Question.
We need Jesus for two reasons. First, we need Jesus to see God.
God is beyond our comprehension. We either work really hard to figure God out or get God’s attention, or we forget about God because God is unknowable.
Jesus is God con Carne. God with skin on.
Tell story of the birds.
Yet, there is a second and deeper reason we need Jesus. We need to know God.
What is the real purpose of this life. Is there a way out of all the violence, hatred, destruction, and death?
The problem is that our natural human tendency is to make life about winners and losers. The world is an either/or, win/lose scenario.
We’ve made religion into this as well. That is how we abuse the Law and think we are “justified” by “getting it right.”
I win. You lose.
Jesus steps into this mess and has a message for both sides of this equation.
Winners must follow the way of the cross and let the I die.
That’s what Paul meant when he said I am crucified with Christ.
To the losers, to those who suffer and are beaten down by life, Jesus says something else. God enters into our suffering
This has always been the case. God stands with the oppressed and suffers with us.
The only way to victory is through love and forgiveness, not domination.
The message for all people is that the only way to actually know God is to walk the way of the cross and know that God is with you all the way.

Because there is resurrection on the other side. God’s love sets us free to live in the love of God with the whole world.
This needs to be proclaimed to everybody.
Now, we are the body of christ as we participate in Jesus’ death and resurrection. We eat his body and drink his blood and live in the messy mystery of being the body of Christ to proclaim this Good News to the world.
