The firststepto become a Christianistounderstandwhatthe term “Christian”means.The originof the
term“Christian”wasin the cityof Antiochinthe firstcenturyA.D. We can learnthisin Acts 11:26,
“…andwhenhe foundhim,he broughthim to Antioch.So for a wholeyear BarnabasandSaul met
with the church andtaught great numbers ofpeople. The discipleswere calledChristiansfirstat
Antioch”..Itis possible that,atfirst,the term“Christian”wasintendedtobe an insult.The word
essentiallymeans“littleChrist.”However,overthe centuries,believersinChristhave adoptedthe term
“Christian”anduse it to be identifiedasfollowersof JesusChrist.A simpledefinitionof aChristianisa
personwhofollowsJesusChrist.
The nextimportantunderstandingone needstohave is:WhyshouldIbecome a Christian? We can learn
inMark 10:45, “For even the Son of Mandid not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his lifeas
a ransomfor many.”.Here we getanotherquestion asto whydidwe needto be ransomed?The ideaof
a ransom isa paymentthat mustbe made inexchange forthe release of aperson.The ideaof a ransom
ismost frequentlyusedininstancesof kidnapping, whenthe heldperson isdemandedasaransom to
be paidfor the person’srelease. Jesuspaidourransomtofree us frombondage! Againaquestion:
Bondage fromwhat? There are twooccurrencesthat we learnfrom.Firstwe all have read and know
that Adamand Eve disobeyedandhence sinnedagainsttheirverycreatorGod.This sincontinueswith
mankindandkeeps addingmore sinand sinfulness bycontinuingtobreechGods commandmentsfor
mankind.Ouractionsmake us inbondage tosin andits consequences.These consequencesare physical
deathfollowedbyeternal separationfromGod. Itis only JesusChristwhocanbring usback to God as
we can read in Mark 10:45; that Jesusgave hislife as a ransom for many…all of mankind!
The nextstepwouldbe to understand:WhydidJesusneedtopaythisransom?Because we are all
infectedwithsin aswe can learnfrom Romans3:23, “ …
for all have sinnedand fall shortof the glory of
God”We are all sinnersone wayor the otherand hence we deserve judgmentfromGod as we can learn
fromRomans 6:23, “For the wages ofsin isdeath, but the gift ofGod iseternal life inChrist Jesusour
Lord”.Jesuspaidour ransomby beingthe atoningsacrifice by dyingonthe cross to paythe penaltyfor
our sins as statedin 1 Corinthians15:3, “For whatI received I passed onto youas of firstimportance[a]

that Christdied for our sinsaccordingto the Scriptures” and again saidin 2 Corinthians5:21, “God
made himwho had nosin to be sin[a]
forus, so that in himwe might become the righteousnessof
God”.
One mat wantto know: How couldJesus’ sacrificial deathsufficientlypayforall of our sins? Throughthe
scriptureswe can learnthat JesuswasGod in humanform, whocome to earthto become one of us so
He couldidentifywithusanddie forour sins:“The Wordbecame flesh andmade hisdwellingamong
us. We haveseen hisglory,the gloryof the one and onlySon, whocame from the Father, full of grace
and truth” (John1:14). As God,Jesus’deathwasinfinite invalue,sufficienttopayfor the sinsof the
entire world:“Heis the atoningsacrificefor our sins,andnot onlyfor ours but alsofor the sinsof the

2. whole world” (1 John2:2). Jesus’resurrectionafterHisdeathdemonstratedthatHisdeathwasthe
sufficientsacrifice andthatHe had conqueredsinanddeath.
Nowthat we understandmore abutour God and father,itisimportantto learnhow one can I become a
Christian…Because of His absolute love forus,Godhas made it exceedinglysimple tobecome a
Christian.All one needs todois receive JesusasyourSavior.Butitis not simplyaverbal statementbuta
true and willingactiontoseekhimandfindhimby readingorlearning(fromonesChurch) more and
more about Himthrough the gospel.Whenwe come toknow more aboutJesusChrist, itisthenthat
one receivesagreaterunderstandingof ourGod whocame done to save usfrom eternal damnation.It
isthenthat we can fully understandand acceptHisdeathas the sufficientsacrifice foryoursins.We can
learnfromJohn 3:16, “ For Godso lovedthe world that he gave hisone and onlySon, that whoever
believes inhim shall notperish but have eternal life”
It isthenthat one can comprehendandbegintofullytrustHimalone as one’sGodand Savior.We can
learnwhenJesusstatedin John14:6; Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one
comes to the Father except throughme”. We can receive afurtherunderstandingwhenwe read Acts
4:12, “Salvationisfoundin no one else, for there is no other name under heaven givento mankindby
whichwe must be saved.”.BecomingaChristianisnotall about rituals, simply goingtochurch,or doing
certainthingswhile refrainingfromotherthings.BecomingaChristianisall abouthavinga personal
relationshipwithJesusChrist. Itisthis personal relationship withJesusChrist,throughfaith, iswhat
makesa persona Christian.

believe.Doyouunderstandandbelieve thatyouhave sinnedandare worthyof judgmentfromGod?Do
youunderstandandbelievethatJesustookyourpunishmentuponHimself,dyinginyourplace?Doyou
understandandbelieve thatHisdeathwasthe sufficientsacrifice topayforyour sins?If your answersto
these three questionsare yes,thensimplyplace yourtrustinJesusas yourSavior.Receive Him, byfaith,
fullytrustinginHimalone.Thatisall it takesto become aChristian!
