on Citytv channels across Canada this fall. The 10-episode
series follows two Alberta couples as they compete for the ultimate
prize: a fully furnished home of their own design, worth an incredible

What is My RONA Home?
Even in a 500-channel universe, My RONA Home will stand out from
the crowd. The show is more than just a home renovation show, it’s a
reality-TV contest where the object is for two couples to turn two bare
houses into homes by rolling up their sleeves and doing it themselves;
although they’ll have help from lots of experts, including professional
interior designers.
Thehousestheystartwitharelittlemorethanframesandinsulation;but
afterjusttenweeks,eachteamwillhavedesigned,builtanddecoratedan

A very eco-friendly scene
Now more than ever, building eco is the way to go, so both teams
competing in My RONA Home are pursuing certification under the
LEED Canada for Homes rating system (see ‘What is LEED?’ sidebar),
which promotes the design and construction of high-performance
eco-friendly homes. Many of the products used at each stage of con-
struction are selected because they earn points towards certification,
such as energy efficient windows and appliances. Also, segments will
be presented during each show to help consumers become more aware
of these eco-responsible products and tips.
But it’s really about people
While many home reno shows are about the renovations, My RONA
Home is really about people. By using a countdown format and turn-
ing the show into a competition, RONA has added an air of excite-
ment that other shows just can’t match. The audience will follow the
trials, tribulations, and joys the couples experience as they pour heart,
energy and soul into the planning, building and decorating of their
homes. The way the couples pull together to make their dreams come

What is LEED?
SuStainable green building practiceS
LEED stands for“Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, ”
and it’s a rating system for green building with categories for neigh-
bourhood developments, commercial buildings, renovations and new
homes.
The LEED system recognizes sustainability in categories like site
development, water and energy efficiency and materials selection.
A certified home would use water-efficient practices, like rainwater
catchment and high-efficiency fixtures; and would likely have a re-
newable energy system, like solar or wind. Essentially, everything gets
rated, from high-efficiency windows and airflow to drought-hardiness
of garden plants.
For building materials and fixtures, a LEED-certified home would rely
heavily on FSC-(Forest Stewardship Council) certified or non-tropical
wood, low-VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) paint and environmen-
tally-friendly products like ENERGY STAR lights and efficient appli-
ances. And LEED touches on construction practices, too—to minimize
waste and pollution every step of the way, from cutting wood to final
landscaping.
Even the house’s design, size and nearness to public transit are rated
against a checklist. LEED ratings are graded, from basic certification
through to Platinum, so whereas building your new home to Platinum
criteria can be pricey, a more affordable certified home will still help
