Jeremy Bentham was an English philosopher born in 1748 in London who developed the concept of utilitarianism which asserts that the best action is the one that maximizes happiness and minimizes pain; he believed that pleasure and pain govern all human actions and thought. Bentham had a career in law but was also interested in topics like organized religion, legal reform, and natural rights, and he founded University College London to provide university education to those excluded from traditional universities.
