Building Connections to Increase Engagement: Investigating Nontraditional Fir...Michelle Keba
Michelle Keba conducted a study to understand the role of curiosity in the research process of nontraditional undergraduate students. She administered surveys measuring epistemic curiosity and information literacy self-efficacy, rated student annotated bibliographies, and interviewed students. Regression analysis showed a relationship between curiosity and self-efficacy but not bibliography quality. Interviews revealed students were more curious when topics were personally meaningful and they dug deeper to satisfy curiosity, though they needed guidance to refine thesis statements. The implications are to promote personal connections to topics and encourage exploration to increase student engagement in research.

RESEARCH EXPERIENCE
Senior Research Assistant, Sept. 2014 – June 2016
Stress in Pregnancy Lab, Research Foundation of City University of New York & Queens College, New York, NY
Project: Stress In Pregnancy (SIP) Study, a multi-site NIH funded longitudinal study of pregnancy in developmental
psychopathology. Currently in Phase II of the study, participants are invited to Queens College for a follow-up visit, in
order to track the effects of stress (including Superstorm Sandy disaster related stress) during pregnancy on the
development of child psychopathology, relative to other variables of interest, including maternal biomarkers,
(epi)genetic factors, socioeconomic status, and microbiome diversity.
• Designed and programmed a psychophysiology startle probe paradigm to measure heart rate, skin
conductance, and respiration reactivity in mother and child using E-prime and Acqknowledge software
• Recruited and scheduled participants for follow-up assessments
• Pre-processed and analyzed skin conductance and heart rate variability data
• Conducted training for research assistants in psychophysiology administration and biological specimen
collection (hair, saliva, and toenail samples)
• Administered and scored the WPPSI-IV child assessment tools on 17-53 month old children
• Administered and scored the Bayley-III Scales of Infant and Toddler Development
• Administered and scored the SCID and MINI interviews to mothers

Ecological Neuroscience Research Lab, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
Projects: Decision Making in Hoarders | Emotional Stroop | Physiological Correlates of Empathy
• Programmed an experiment to analyze and contrast object acquire versus discard decisions
• Recruited hoarders from the community and administered prescreening questionnaires
• Wrote and submitted protocols for IRB approval
• Generated stimuli for an emotional stroop task to assess semantic processing of subliminally presented
emotional words prior to faces of varying emotional expression.
• Assisted in analyzing the physiological correlates of empathy in health-care workers
