Sample Training: Understanding and Managing Cultural Difference in a Jewish C...Lisa Finkelstein
The goal for this sample 90-minute workshop, lesson plan, or training outline is to strengthen the ability of the participants to teach, role model, and/or transmit the topic of understanding and managing cultural differences to others. As a group, we will be defining cultural differences, as well as discussing issues of class, race, and nationality (or national origin).
While we are speaking about cultural differences, we will not specifically focused on all topics of diversity including religious denominations, gender identity, and family structures as this is covered in a different training. Specifically, this workshop aims to have the following learning objectives:
1. To define, re-familiarize and understand what are cultural differences.
2. To challenge participants to look at cultural differences with a new lens.
3. To help participants learn how to manage and advocate for cultural differences.
4. To practice managing cultural differences.
Estimated sample workshop for thirty participants in 90 minutes.

The Roman Empire A Historical Colossus.pdfkaushalkr1407
The Roman Empire, a vast and enduring power, stands as one of history's most remarkable civilizations, leaving an indelible imprint on the world. It emerged from the Roman Republic, transitioning into an imperial powerhouse under the leadership of Augustus Caesar in 27 BCE. This transformation marked the beginning of an era defined by unprecedented territorial expansion, architectural marvels, and profound cultural influence.
The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. John Peery
Jefferson County Public Schools
Dear Mr. Peery,
Many thanks to Jeffco Public Schools for your consideration of our charter school
application. As I explained when we spoke in person, the New America School is
undergoing some transition and re-organization and we feel it is in the best interests of our
students and organization to withdraw our application at this time. We will be spending this
school-year implementing our first charter school in the Adams 14 School District and a
contract school with Denver Public Schools, and will bring our learning to the development
of future charter school applications. We appreciate your time and look forward to working
with you again.
Additionally, on September 15th, the Board of Directors of the New America School
accepted Alby Segall’s resignation as Executive Director effective immediately. Since that
time, the board of directors of the New America School has been taking a close look at the
schools’ needs and our resources, combined with the feedback we’ve received from many of
the staff and District representatives. We are pleased to announce a re-organization that re-
directs much of our resources to your schools and minimizes the amounts being directed to
administration. It is our commitment to both the Adams 14 Charter School and the Denver
Contract School to provide the best instruction and learning environment in keeping with
the terms of both agreements. As a result we have made the following changes effective
Monday, October 04, 2004:
• Created a Head of School for both Denver and Adams 14. We have appointed
Melanie Roberts as Head of School for Adams 14 and Marla Jacobsen as Head of
School for Denver. It is the board’s intention to give each school the full-time, on-
site leadership each needs to provide the best quality program for our students. The
top priorities of both heads will be interview and fill the open teacher positions and
to address some of the ongoing classroom needs of teachers.
• Added a Head of Student Affairs and Vocational Counseling for the Denver
Contract School. We have appointed Jeremy Cooper to this position. His job will
be to work with students at this school to facilitate their advancement to the next
level of their education or work careers, along with creating a rich and empowering
2. school environment for all. This is a key component of the Denver contract and we
feel it is important to dedicate resources to this end.
• Reduced the New America School non-profit staffing to include a President and
Administrative Assistant who will facilitate the many business functions for both
schools. These include, but are not limited to payroll, human resources, accounting
and legal services. It is our intention to provide these services to the schools in a
more cost-efficient manner than they can provide them on their own. A job
announcement will be issued this week for the position of President and it is our goal
to have a new person selected by the board of directors in early November.
If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to call me at 303-246-8696.
On behalf of the Board of Directors of the New America School, I thank you for your
consideration of our request and patience as we undergo these positive changes.
Sincerely,
Susan A. Lythgoe
Interim Executive Director
