PROFESSIONAL PROFILE (in a nutshell)
I am currently employed by Kumba Iron Ore (Anglo American) as Principal for Mineral
Resources and Geometallurgy, signing off as Competent Person for the company’s Mineral
Resources.
I had the privilege of serving the bulk commodity mining industry (coal and iron ore) for 23
years since the beginning of 1993; having 11 years coal experience (exploration and mining
geology) with my coal geology career ending as ResidentGeologist at Grootegeluk Mine (South
Africa’s largest coal mine), as well as 12 years iron ore experience (exploration, mining and
resource geology).
I am registered as a professional natural scientist with The South African Council for Natural
Scientific Professions (reg. nr. 400423/04) in the field of geological science.
I have in-field exploration, on-mine production geology, on-mine resource geology and on-
mine geology management experience, with my current primary corporate focus overseeing
the company’s resource estimation (including internal independent auditing), coordinating the
company’s resource and reserve reporting in accordance with statutory requirements ,
ensuring proper governance in terms of geological sampling via quality assurance and quality
control and establishing and implementing geometallurgical resource characterization
protocols.
I am a process thinker, with a work philosophy preferring an approach to secure basic
standards but to be careful not to sub-optimise.
I developed my managerialand leadership skills through managing aResource Geology section
at an iron ore mining operation; managing a Resource Geology section at corporate officelevel
of iron ore company; leading a Geology Department at an iron ore mining operation, and
leading a Geology Department at a coalmining operation. I participated in the Anglo American
advanced management training course in 2010.
A Briggs & Myers evaluation conducted in 2009 describes me as a person having introverted
intuition with extraverted thinking (INTJ-Profile).
