over the years including The Red Cross
especially after Hurricane Katrina, and other
global causes.


Jay-Z is a clear supporter of President Obama
during both elections. He uses his musical
platform to express his opinion on politics
and other social issues. His music is highly
political and he often makes references to
social injustices or experiences he has
witnessed.





internet. He has his own
Wikipedia and has
countless websites
dedicated to his music
and lyrics. His popularity
overlaps boundaries and
barriers and his superstar
status facilitates his
presence online and
throughout social media.
He is boundless.





created to promote JayZ fandom and events.

releases that are
specifically for those
specific tours and
albums.

maintained:
Fan sites are maintained
by fans on their own

Online websites that
commemorate specific
albums or Jay-Z tours are
managed by individuals
associated with Jay-Z but
not him per say. The
posts are almost always
in third person.




Jay-Z’s audience is varied. He has a varied
audience and due to his collaborations with
other successful performers like Justin
Timberlake, Beyonce, and Linkin Park, he has
transgressed into different music genres and
reached different fans.
Jay-Z is a master at finding his audience. He is
experienced at crossing boundaries and music
genres and transgressing boundaries with music
to mix genres and make them hits. They are
generally well received and this opens up
opportunities to make more fans.





Jay-Z does not tend to post personal information like
photos of himself or any content that is not business
oriented. He posts videos of himself collaborating
with artists in New York City which offers an intimate
interaction with the audience present as well as the
viewer online (next slide)
. He does not tend to post videos or photos of his
family for example, or other personal information.
The information that he does share that is meaningful
would be meaningful content for fans like tour dates,
new releases of music, collaborations, events, and
other artist oriented work. It is based solely for his
fans in relation to his career, not his personal life.
How does he do it?
Jay-Z knows what works in terms of engaging his fans. He
had a Twitter event last July where he interacted live with
fans. The event was so successful he ‘shut down the
internet’ as he later playfully refers to in ‘Somewhere in
America’ where he states: “might crash ya internet”. There
were so many fans asking him questions that the website
could not keep up.
 What is he not doing?
 Jay-Z does not provide personal, life experiences in the
form of online photos or other content that his wife, singer
Beyonce does. He does provide videos and photos of his
creative process like making a song for example, or
hosting an event.







Online and physical spaces are easily converged
with Jay-Z. He likes to post videos on his
involvement with art communities and other
events he engages in. He creates physical spaces
where he interacts with fans personally, and
then posts these online for the world to see. An

York where he is performing art. The photo
above is from the event in Tribeca mentioned
above.




This is an issue for Jay-Z. He is such a
superstar and so popular that online websites
are not capable of keeping up with the
comments and back and forth dialogue when
he goes on Twitter. He literally shut down
Twitter. He has not posted since then.
He does not tend to converse with fans
regularly and so when he does, it becomes a
frenzy of fans trying to message him.
I chose Jay-Z as my
musician because he is
one of my favourite
musicians, I value his
music and his work, and
although he is a difficult
artist to discuss in such a
short time, it shows the
magnitude of his success
in so many industries,
and music. He truly is a
mogul.

  • 10.  Jay-Z is a clear supporter of President Obama during both elections. He uses his musical platform to express his opinion on politics and other social issues. His music is highly political and he often makes references to social injustices or experiences he has witnessed.
  • 11.     Websites he uses: Twitter Facebook MySpace  All of his associated businesses have online presences. They are managed by his employees.  Jay-Z is literally everywhere on the internet. He has his own Wikipedia and has countless websites dedicated to his music and lyrics. His popularity overlaps boundaries and barriers and his superstar status facilitates his presence online and throughout social media. He is boundless.
  • 12.    Who they are: Fan communities- there are many fan communities on Twitter and Facebook that are created to promote JayZ fandom and events. Sites for albums or tours- there are sites for albums and tour date releases that are specifically for those specific tours and albums.    How they are maintained: Fan sites are maintained by fans on their own time. Online websites that commemorate specific albums or Jay-Z tours are managed by individuals associated with Jay-Z but not him per say. The posts are almost always in third person.
  • 13.   Jay-Z’s audience is varied. He has a varied audience and due to his collaborations with other successful performers like Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, and Linkin Park, he has transgressed into different music genres and reached different fans. Jay-Z is a master at finding his audience. He is experienced at crossing boundaries and music genres and transgressing boundaries with music to mix genres and make them hits. They are generally well received and this opens up opportunities to make more fans.
  • 14.    Jay-Z does not tend to post personal information like photos of himself or any content that is not business oriented. He posts videos of himself collaborating with artists in New York City which offers an intimate interaction with the audience present as well as the viewer online (next slide) . He does not tend to post videos or photos of his family for example, or other personal information. The information that he does share that is meaningful would be meaningful content for fans like tour dates, new releases of music, collaborations, events, and other artist oriented work. It is based solely for his fans in relation to his career, not his personal life.
  • 15. How does he do it? Jay-Z knows what works in terms of engaging his fans. He had a Twitter event last July where he interacted live with fans. The event was so successful he ‘shut down the internet’ as he later playfully refers to in ‘Somewhere in America’ where he states: “might crash ya internet”. There were so many fans asking him questions that the website could not keep up.  What is he not doing?  Jay-Z does not provide personal, life experiences in the form of online photos or other content that his wife, singer Beyonce does. He does provide videos and photos of his creative process like making a song for example, or hosting an event.  
  • 16.    Online and physical spaces are easily converged with Jay-Z. He likes to post videos on his involvement with art communities and other events he engages in. He creates physical spaces where he interacts with fans personally, and then posts these online for the world to see.   • 17.   This is an issue for Jay-Z. He is such a superstar and so popular that online websites are not capable of keeping up with the comments and back and forth dialogue when he goes on Twitter. He literally shut down Twitter. He has not posted since then. He does not tend to converse with fans regularly and so when he does, it becomes a frenzy of fans trying to message him.
  • 18. I chose Jay-Z as my musician because he is one of my favourite musicians, I value his music and his work, and although he is a difficult artist to discuss in such a short time, it shows the magnitude of his success in so many industries, and music. He truly is a mogul.
