Containerization (à la Docker) is increasing the elastic nature of cloud infrastructure by an order of magnitude. If you have adopted Docker, or are considering it, you are probably facing questions like:
- How many containers can you run on a given Amazon EC2 instance type?
- Which metric should you look at to measure contention?
- How do you manage fleets of containers at scale?
Datadog’s CTO, Alexis Lê-Quôc, presents the challenges and benefits of running Docker containers at scale. Alexis explains how to use quantitative performance patterns to monitor your infrastructure at the new level of magnitude and increased complexity introduced by containerization.
When running any amount of systems, gaining visibility into what they are doing can be a non-trivial matter. Starting on the path to monitoring can prove bumpy, and if you don’t measure, you don’t know. In this session, Michael Fiedler, Director of TechOps, will speak on personal experience with scalability, deployment, and monitoring challenges prior to using Datadog - and how that changed. He will cover how to get started, and examples of where monitoring the company's platform with Datadog provided the guiding light towards the team solving scalability problems.
This document summarizes a presentation about monitoring challenges with Kubernetes and containers. The presentation covered:
- Monitoring 101 concepts like categorizing issues and focusing on symptoms to find root causes.
- Challenges of monitoring dynamic container infrastructure like increased operational complexity from many ephemeral containers and scaling to monitor thousands of metrics.
- Approaches for container monitoring including taking a service-centric rather than host-centric view and using tags to query metrics flexibly across infrastructure attributes.
- Features of Datadog for container monitoring like automatic discovery of containers and metadata, off-the-shelf integrations, and dashboards for visualizing metrics and alerts.
Datadog is a monitoring service that helps scale monitoring through pre-canned tools like integrations and dashboards, templated dashboards that can be reused across environments, and a powerful API. The API allows monitoring to be coded and integrated with provisioning tools like CloudFormation, version controlled, and tracked like any other code. This improves monitoring by bringing development practices like testing, versioning, and avoiding duplication to monitoring configuration and resources.

Monitoring and Scaling Redis at DataDog - Ilan Rabinovitch, DataDogRedis Labs
Think you have big data? What about high availability
requirements? At DataDog we process billions of data points every day including metrics and events, as we help the world
monitor the their applications and infrastructure. Being the world’s monitoring system is a big responsibility, and thanks to
Redis we are up to the task. Join us as we discuss how the DataDog team monitors and scales Redis to power our SaaS based monitoring offering. We will discuss our usage and deployment patterns, as well as dive into monitoring best practices for production Redis workloads

ALL NATURAL HAZARDS. Capacity for intelligent emergency response, recovery and reconstructionis is essential for community resilience. Presentation courtesy of Dr Walter Hays, Global Alliance for Disaster Reduction
CAN WE MAKE MEGACITIES RESILIENT TO NATURAL HAZARDS? Cities and megacities exist by geologic, hydrologic, and atmospheric consent, which can be withdrawn without notice. Vulnerabilities reflect policy flaws with respect to preparedness, protection, response, and recovery. Preparedness, protection, response, and recovery are the most effective measures. But, they are hard to sell to the public and take time to implement.
The document discusses a person who is daydreaming of something new and exciting but has their hat stuck on their bum. They have sought advice from others by calling everyone they know, travelled near and far looking to fulfill themselves, and even tried to be like John Lennon. However, they just realized while drinking an energy drink that their hat has been crushed by sitting on it with it still stuck to their bum.
The document briefly mentions reggae music and Bob Marley, a famous reggae artist, without providing much context or detail. It lists the terms "reggae", "teggae", and "bob marley" twice each without explanation.
The poem is about a man who is drowning and experiencing a mental breakdown. He feels lost at sea during a storm and calls out for help but no one can hear him. He descends deeper into madness, having disturbing visions and feeling completely alone. At the end, the narrator reflects on having also experienced mental health issues and feeling adrift without guidance, thinking of a friend who drowned while in the hospital.

This document outlines a strategic planning guide divided into four parts: 1) how to create a strategic plan, 2) how to implement a strategic plan, 3) how to present a strategic plan, and 4) how to obtain and customize presentation slides. Part 1 on creating a strategic plan provides a template and guidance on sections for the background, overall strategic plan, detailed strategic plan, product portfolio, strategy, markets, competition, leadership, assets, forecasts, and implementation. Part 2 covers implementing the strategic plan. Part 3 focuses on presenting the strategic plan effectively. Part 4 describes how to access and modify slides to support the presentation.
Wayne Schoenmakers has over 25 years of experience in the aerospace industry, including ten years with Pan American Airlines and Boeing's 777 commercial program. He has held senior quality and manufacturing engineering roles at McDonnell Douglas, Rockwell International, Matsushita Avionics, and B/E Aerospace. His responsibilities include supplier management, auditing, procedure development and training. He aims to ensure smooth workflow and accomplish goals through his organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
Health has gained recognition as a foreign policy concern in recent years. Political leaders increasingly address global health problems within their international relations agendas. The confluence of health and foreign policy has opened these issues to analysis that helps clarify the tenets and determinants of this linkage, offering a new framework for international health policy. Yet as health remains profoundly bound to altruistic values, caution is required before generalizing about the positive outcomes of merging international health and foreign policy principles. In particular, the possible side-effects of this framework deserve further consideration. This paper examines the interaction of health and foreign policy in humanitarian action, where public health and foreign policy are often in direct conflict. Using a case-based approach, this analysis shows that health and foreign policy need not be at odds in this context, although there are situations where altruistic and interest-based values compete. The hierarchy of foreign policy functions must be challenged to avoid misuse of national authority where health interventions do not coincide with national security and domestic interests

This document discusses defining business units and strategic business plans. It discusses segmenting broad product groups like shampoo into specific units based on factors like target markets, product types, and product-market characteristics.
It provides examples of segmenting the shampoo market based on attributes like target customer groups (e.g. mothers, young women, men), product types (e.g. dandruff, dry scalp, ethnic), and defines assessable business units. Guidelines are outlined for determining whether to combine or separate business units based on factors like marketing skills, technology, distribution channels, and competitive positions. Finally, examples are given of how businesses like airlines could be defined through a product-market matrix.
Implementation is for many the most difficult part of strategic management. This presentation gives advice on implementing in a period of incremental change.
The document discusses various tools for developing Alexa skills including PyAlexa, Flask-Ask, AWS Lambda, and Zappa. It recommends Flask-Ask as a promising framework that does not require AWS Lambda for development, allowing testing on a local PC using Flask and Ngrok. Links are provided about Flask-Ask, tutorials on developing Alexa skills with Flask-Ask, and Zappa for deploying Flask apps to AWS Lambda.
