2. History of Japanese Literature
• Japanese literature
Throughout most of its history has been influenced
by cultural contact with neighboring Asian
literatures , most notably China and its literature.
During the Heian Period, Japan’s original Kokufu
culture ( lit. National Culture ) developed and
literature also established its own style, with the
significant usage and development of Kana(仮名) to
write Japanese literature.
3. Famous Japanese Author
• Haruki Murakami is one of the most well known Japanese
Authors. He has written more than 20 novels and many
short stories.
• He has gone on to have a dynamic career, winning awards
in Japan and internationally, including Jerusalem Prize.
• His work has been translated into more than 50 languages.
4. Famous Poet
• Matsuo Basho was the
most famous poet of the
Edo period in Japan. He is
recognized as a greatest
master of Haiku.
• His famous work is “ Kai
Oi “ , Edo Sanjin “,
Inakano Kuawase “.
• His poems are
internationally renowned
and in Japan, many of his
poems are reproduced on
monuments and traditional
sites.
5. “The Old Pond”by Matsuo Basho
• Frogs Jumps in – sound of
water. A lonely pond in age-
old stillness sleeps…..
Suddenly into it a lithe frog
leaps. Water’s sound!
• The old pond seems to be a
symbol of the subconscious
mind. It is there inside
everyone. Like the old pond, it
exists in silence. Moreover, the
poet refers to the subconscious
mind of an old person.
