What are Libraries Good For?
Libraries serve several important purposes according to experts. They act as cultural storehouses that preserve the best of human thought and ideas. Libraries also organize and provide access to information, playing a crucial role in preserving knowledge for future generations. While digital formats are increasing access, physical books still have educational value for deep, meditative reading that some argue is nearly impossible on screens. There remains no proven method for long-term digital preservation comparable to the endurance of printed materials. As such, libraries should continue maintaining traditional collections of books and materials in addition to digital resources.

In fact, the virtual world is an almost perfect medium to create a library focused on a particular topic. A fast-paced overview of Second Life, virtual librarianship, and the different types of libraries currently in-world will illustrate the power of special libraries and the impact they have on residents. Participants will be transported to Second Life libraries via a live demonstration, and will walk away with a feel for these exciting virtual communities and their opportunities for special libraries.

They are one of the remaining freely accessible civil society institutions and, in their local form, provide a public sphere for civil engagement; from social arena, to providing opportunities for participation. However, austerity measures have cut public library budgets, resulting in limited opening hours, depleted stocks, reduced staff and a growing reliance on volunteers. Other services are fighting, or have succumb to, closure.
While cuts to public libraries affect us all, the consequences are unequal and reflect a widening gulf between rich and poor. Those who are excluded, less able or disenfranchised disproportionately rely on public libraries, not only as a source of information, but as a space of inclusion. To illustrate, this paper draws on ongoing research on the impact of austerity on public libraries. It presents the accounts of homeless people and their everyday encounters with their local library. On one hand the public library was relied on for access to information services necessary for navigating welfare reform, for informal education and books for enjoyment. On the other, it cultivated homeless users’ sense of belonging, providing a space of safety, peace and sanctuary. The paper demonstrates the vital contribution that public libraries make to supporting community well-being and social justice – but only when given proper investment and priority. A stark rendering of what will be lost should statutory public library services continue to be cut, this paper demonstrations how austerity is creating the conditions for widening social divisions.

We often believe that a child, yet a young adult, only needs to be taught how to read and write for us to feel in the right to reproach him if he doesn’t actually do it or if he’s not really good at it.Well, knowing how to read is not enough to motivate reading. Reading is an “habitus”, a suit that could fit tight, or loose, that we need to try on a couple of times in the dressing room before choosing to buy it. The school library is a guest-house, a place in which kids, especially culturally deprived ones, must feel safe and welcome to talk about stories, experiences, opinions. A forum to meet books of course, but also readers. A workshop meant to sew our personal reader’s habitus, rejuvenating it from its old mousy image and preparing it for us to grow inside it.

LIBRARIES AS WE NOW ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO PEOPLE WHO DON’T HAVE THE SUFFICIENT AMOUNT OF MONEY TO LET THEM STUDY IN A SCHOOL. THAT IS WHY PUBLIC LIBRARIES ARE OPEN FOR EVERYONE WHO IS WILLING TO USE IT. LIBRARIES ARE BUILT TO HELP PEOPLE EDUCATE OURSELVES THROUGH READING BOOKS. THEY ARE BUILT FOR PEOPLE WHO NEED IT, BUT AFTER SEVERAL YEARS, MANY LIBRARIES HAVE BEEN CLOSED DOWN BECAUSE ONLY FEW PEOPLE USE IT. WHAT’S THE USE OF PUBLIC LIBRARIES IF PEOPLE USE DOESN’T USE THEM ANYMORE? BUT, AT LEAST, SOME PEOPLE WE SHOULD BE TAKING CARE OF OUR LIBRARIES. LIBRARIES CAN BE ONE OF THE FACTORS TO BECOME EDUCATED AND SUCCESSFUL BY JUST READING BOOKS. CAN YOU SEE THE PICTURE NOW? LIBRARIES CAN REALLY EDUCATE US. USE THE LIBRARY TO LET PEOPLE KNOW THAT LIBRARIES ARE IMPORTANT TO PEOPLE. I CONCLUDED THAT LIBRARIES ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO OUR DAILY LIVING. BUT IF PEOPLE JUST LEAVE IT ALONE THEN IT WILL LOSE ITS SIGNIFICANCE.
