June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

James Roland Jones| the Growing Influence of Citizen Journalists
1. The Rise of Citizen Journalism: Impact and Challenges
James Roland Jones says in this digital age, the traditional landscape of journalism has been
transformed by the rise of citizen journalism. With the widespread availability of smartphones
and social media platforms, ordinary individuals can now participate in news reporting,
providing firsthand accounts of events and shaping public discourse. In this blog post, we will
explore the James Roland Jones thoughts on impact of citizen journalism on the media
landscape and the challenges it presents to both journalists and society at large.
Understanding Citizen Journalism
Citizen journalism refers to the practice of ordinary individuals engaging in the collection,
analysis, and dissemination of news and information. Through the power of digital technology,
anyone can become a citizen journalist, capturing images or videos, documenting events, and
sharing them with a global audience. This democratization of news reporting has had profound
implications for journalism as a whole.
The Impact of Citizen Journalism
2. James Roland Jones , breaking News in Real-Time: Citizen Journalists have the ability to capture
and share breaking news in real-time, often before traditional news outlets can arrive at the
scene. From protests and disasters to human rights violations, these individuals provide
firsthand accounts, bringing attention to events that might have otherwise gone unnoticed.
Diverse Perspectives and Underrepresented Voices: Citizen journalism has opened up a
platform for underrepresented voices and marginalized communities to share their stories. By
bypassing traditional gatekeepers, citizen journalists can shed light on issues that may be
overlooked or underreported by mainstream media, fostering a more inclusive and diverse
media landscape.
Holding Power to Account: Citizen journalists often play a crucial role in holding those in power
accountable. Through their investigations and exposés, they can uncover corruption, injustices,
and abuses of authority. Their work complements the efforts of professional journalists and
contributes to a more transparent society.
Increased Engagement and Interactivity: Citizen journalism encourages active participation
from the audience, blurring the line between news consumers and producers. Social media
platforms provide opportunities for individuals to engage in discussions, share opinions, and
3. contribute to the narrative surrounding news events. This interactive nature fosters a more
engaged and informed citizenry.
Challenges Faced by Citizen Journalism
Verification and Credibility: One of the key challenges for citizen journalism is the need to
ensure accuracy and reliability. Traditional news organizations have established editorial
processes and fact-checking mechanisms in place, whereas citizen journalists may lack the
same level of training or resources. Verifying information becomes crucial to avoid the spread
of misinformation and maintain credibility.
Ethics and Standards: Professional journalists adhere to a code of ethics and professional
standards, including principles such as fairness, accuracy, and accountability. Citizen journalists
may not always have the same awareness or understanding of these principles, leading to
ethical dilemmas and potential harm. Balancing the freedom of expression with responsible
reporting remains a challenge.
James Roland Jones , legal and Safety Concerns: Citizen journalists often find themselves in
precarious situations, reporting from conflict zones or volatile environments. They may face
legal repercussions, harassment, or physical risks. Ensuring their safety and understanding their
legal rights is vital for the protection of citizen journalists.
Information Overload and Filter Bubbles: With the abundance of news and information
available through citizen journalism, there is a risk of information overload and the formation of
filter bubbles. People may gravitate towards sources that align with their preexisting beliefs,
reinforcing biases and limiting exposure to diverse perspectives. Navigating this information
landscape requires media literacy and critical thinking skills.
Conclusion
According James Roland Jones the rise of citizen journalism has undeniably transformed the
media landscape, giving voice to ordinary individuals and reshaping the way news is reported
and consumed. The impact of citizen journalism can be seen in real-time reporting, diverse
perspectives, and increased engagement.
