1. To Deliver More Smiles:
Smile Bangladesh Program Assessment & Evaluation
Jahanara Kabir
Christina Rozario, Supervisor
Professor Debbie Borie-Holtz
• To assess the experience and volunteering motive
of medical professionals in the nonprofit medical
organization Smile Bangladesh.
• To develop methods to improve the organization.
• The small country of Bangladesh has over
300,000 children and adults with unrepaired cleft
deformities, with 30,000 new cases each year.
• Although Bangladesh has one of the highest rate
of cleft deformities, there are only 30 trained
surgeons in the country that have the skills to
perform such surgeries.
• Smile Bangladesh is a nonprofit organization that
has traveled to impoverished regions in the
country twice a year to perform free cleft
surgeries since 2010.
• The team is comprised of surgeons,
anesthesiologists, nurses, residents, and medical
students.
• A questionnaire was developed using the Rutgers
University survey tool Qualtrics.
Table 1 indicates the results to Survey Question #15: Please
rate how the following factors of the trip measured up to
your expectations for the trip.
I would like to thank my supervisor Christina Rozario
and Dr.Shahid Aziz, for allowing me to learn more
about Smile Bangladesh, and assisting in improving
an amazing organization. I would like to thank
Professor Tefero Gezmu for his guidance and
Professor Holtz for assisting me every step of the
way. I would like to thank Professor Hill for all her
assistance.
