Jacques Cartier was the first French explorer of North America. He carried out three trips between 1534 and 1542 hoping to find a path to Asia, landing in Canada and discovering the Saint Lawrence River. While he did not achieve his objective of establishing a colony in Canada, his explorations contributed to European knowledge of the North American continent.
