The Asmat are an indigenous hunter-gatherer culture living in West Papua, Indonesia. West Papua is located on the western half of New Guinea island north of Australia. The Asmat traditionally practiced face and body piercing and painting for ceremonies and warfare. However, deforestation, colonization, and assimilation are negatively impacting their traditional way of life, and their culture as one of the last remaining hunter-gatherer societies is disappearing as the modern world influences the Asmat people.
