Rescue incident- T.J comes to the Logan’s house because he is hurt and needs
help. He told them what happened & how he wanted to go home. He was used as a
decoy by R.W & Melvin.
Uh-Oh incident- When the Logan kids returned T.J back to his house, they stayed
there to make sure that T.J would be okay, as they were waiting they saw head
lights coming their way. Quickly they hid behind a bush, they watched as Kaleb and
Thurston Wallace knocked on the Avery’s door. Stacey commanded Cassie to take
Little Man and Christopher-John back home.
Mercintle Robbery- T.J, Melvin, and R.W decide to rob the Jim Lee’s store in
Strawberry. They decide to steal the pearl-handled pistol, but they get caught by
Mrs. Barnett. As defense, Melvin and R.W attacked her. T.J gets threatened by the 2
Simms’ brothers after the robbery and finds Stacey for help.

through the quiet yard, then eventually return to the
front porch again.” ( Mr. Morrison)

“Y’all decided to hold court out here tonight”
“ Y’all be sure to mind now,” ordered Big Ma gruffly.
28. Themes
Racism- After the mercantile robbery, Melvin and R. J
didn’t even get in trouble! T.J gets blamed for
everything even though he soon regretted what they
were doing. Instead of believing T.J, they believed
Melvin and R.J just because they were white. The
night riders really didn’t care about the incident,
they just wanted a reason to kill an African
American.
Bravery-The Logan kids were very brave when faced
with horror. Even though they saw really horrible
things being done to the Averys’, they stayed calm.
They could have just completely freaked out and
started yelling at the Night men, but they kept their

no there was no other way to stop the lynching from

that it was burning up, he would finally do something about it.
Working Together- Once Harlan Granger found out that there
was a fire, he immediately took control of the whole situation.
