8. 8.

Here Mother Courage is compared with ‘NiobeFigure’ who is an ancient Greek figure, who has seven sons and seven daughters, has proud of it. One day she looses all her progeny. So Anna is compared with Niobe. But one difference is that Niobe was lamenting after the death of her progeny and Anna is not melancholic after the death of her children. Mother Courage is not collapsed by the nastiness of fate.
 9. 9. A Hyena is a ferocious animal. This word is applied for a nasty and voracious person. Mother Courage has something of a Hyena in her nature.

'Niobe Figure' & 'A Hyena of the Battlefield'.
10. 10.

Her misfortunes and affliction is on account of the excessive pain in the life of her progeny. She has three grown-up children-Two sons Eilif and Feyos , a dumb daughter Kattrin. Each of these three children have different fathers.
 11. 11. In the outset scene, she is deprived of Eilif who is enlisted to fight in the war which causes to his death.
 12. 12. In the third scene she looses her another son Feyos [Swiss Cheese] who is executed by a Catholic Sergeant.
 13. 13. Later, she is deprived of her dumb daughter Kattrin who is onslaughted by a soldier. She is dumb also Due to the cruelty of war. Due to war Anna and Kattrin have to face malnourishment.

Anna's Misfortunes and affliction.
14. 14.

Behind her pain not only Mother Courage is responsible but disillusioned air around them is caused also.
 15. 15. The war makes its wide path not only out side but also inner side of the mankind.
 16. 16. Even she can also prevent the death of Feyos and Kattrin by going far away from the place of war after the death of Eilif.
 17. 17. But for her , her canteen is everything. No doubt that she loves her children much.

Reasons Behind Her Affliction.
18. 18. “ I’ll not see Swiss Cheese
again, and where my Eilif
is the Good Lord knows.
Curse the war.”- Anna Fierling

Above lines are symbolized for her feelings towards her progeny, but If she goes far from the war then she will have to face Malnourishment. So she advocates war. On one occasion, she alleges to cook, “ Peace has broken her neck”.
 19. 19. Above dialogue indicates that what is the importance of war in her life. Here, she is compared with ‘A Hyena of the Battle Field’.

Resons Behind Her Affliction
20. 20.

Anna’s the most commendable credit is her strength of endurance. After the death of her progeny [considered as a ‘Niobe Figure’], she is not exhausted. After such three disasters in her life she not indulges her self in lamenting but she is always ready and show her endurance and guts for the partition of her family. Her feature of self-sacrifice and her spirit of endurance puts her in to the row of the Heroic Figures.
 21. 21. It is also her Heroic Quality that after the death of her thee children to stay around the battle field.

Anna's Heroic Qualities.
22. 22.

Her rigidity and callousness turns her into Anti-Heroine from a noble heroine.
 23. 23. Many ups and downs in her living, draws her to possess such anti-heroic features.
 24. 24. One can also take it as a sort of her peculiar mentality.
 25. 25. Her nasty and voracious nature is only the unheroic quality in her.

“The peace has broken my neck.
On the chaplain’s advice I’ve gone
and bought a lot of supplies.”-Anna
Anna's Anti-Heroic Quality.
26. 26.

In a nutshell Mother Courage is put into the row of common people due to her virtues and vices. Her greedy nature on one moment draws our attention towards her vices but on the second moment it leads us to consider her as a noble heroine. Her greed gives strength her to stay around battle field, that’s why Anna repeats the sentence “Long Live The War”. This woman wins our genuine empathy by virtue of her astonishing fortitude despite some negative traits in her role. Her high spirit , intense love for her progeny, endurance power make her ‘Unique Woman’.

Summing Up
