This document summarizes the results of installing an IVMS (In-Vehicle Monitoring System) in Gulf Contracting Company's fleet vehicles over a 3 year period. Key findings include an 8.4% reduction in excessive fuel consumption from reduced idling, a 48% reduction in traffic violations, and improved driver training. Monitoring drivers' behavior improved safety and efficiency by reducing harsh braking and speeding. The system helped collect data on fuel usage, driver habits, and response times, particularly for vehicles supporting plant operations. Overall, the IVMS improved driving standards while lowering costs and accidents.

This research compares CO emissions of old and new technology vehicles using field test. Benefits of replacement old passenger cars with new ones are estimated. Two representative cars are considered in field tests. Three factors are considered in the comparison; speed, Revolution per minutes (RPM), and relative humidity. Using mobile vehicle emission detector, more than 1000 readings are taken for each vehicle. Analysis proves that CO emissions from old technology vehicles are much more than that from new ones.

1. GULF CONTRACTING COMPANY W.L.L
PLANT DEPARTMENT
IVMS REPORT
INTRODUCTION:
In 2009 a pilot scheme was introduced to fit IVMS system across various
group of vehicles in our fleet to make a study of drivers driving habits in the use of
company vehicles. The system supplied information relating to fuel consumption,
harsh braking, harsh acceleration, over revving and excessive idling tracking of
vehicles especially the Plant service vehicles has been Paramount to rapid response
to site issues. The result were astonishing as to the drivers habits especially on
excessive idling and where fuel saving was achieved.
Better driving standards and economy were obtained and proven over the
short period to achieve this with the report and data received. Training was given
and the results were encouraging and more units were fitted over a period of 3 years
to bring the total to 300. All heavy trucks were first to be fitted along with the Plant
Department’s service and response vehicles. As well as the units giving back
promising results it was a major factor in winning a contract in Barzan in which safety
was paramount whilst driving around on and off site
By implementing the IVMS data was collected regarding,
1. Accidents and Traffic violations
2. Fuel consumption
3. Harsh Braking
4. Harsh Acceleration
5. Excessive Idling
6. Over Revving
2. ACCIDENT/ VIOLATIONS:
Drivers driving habits have changed with IVMS fitted vehicles as they know
that the vehicles is being monitoring and tracked and as a result violation have
reduced. The transport fleet in 2009 was 839 vehicles and now in 2013 the fleet has
reduced by 10% to 739, but accidents are still numerous as the volume of registered
vehicle in Qatar in 2009 were 600,000 and increased yearly by 5.5% with Qatar road
infrastructure ongoing resulting in lengthily queuing traffic leading to all road user
frustrations.
Traffic violations on IVMS fitted vehicles has been reduced by 48% as drivers
are more aware of the monitoring device and subsequently made them more aware
of their driving standards.
FUEL CONSUMPTION/ EXCESSIVE IDLING:
By introducing IVMS fuel saving were achieved in better driving habits which
were monitoring with data received through harsh braking, harsh acceleration, over
revving and economical driving. The main contributory for fuel saving was excessive
idle in which all drivers were taught to switch engines off when the driver was not in
the driving seat. Average excessive fuel consumption saved over 3 years on vehicles
fitted with IVMS is 8.4% at 26% reduced hours.

DRIVER TRAINING:
All new drivers which have the privilege to drive a company vehicle are all
assessed before allowing to drive. The assessment is carried out by a certified
employee in defensive driving and training drivers to a better standard and retrains
drivers on IVMS infringements. Some clients now insist of defensive driving
certificated drivers before being allowed on site in which all drivers on assessment
are given advice and training in defensive driving procedures. A passport to drive
booklet has been complied with various necessary advice in driving standards in
Qatar and has been issued to new drivers after initial assessment and training. It has
provision for future training practices to be documented for different transport
group of vehicles.

4. HARSH BRAKING:
Harsh braking induces higher fuel consumption, increases brake lining life and
possibly saving front end collision. Over the previous last 3 years 12% has been
achieved.
OVER SPEEDING:
Over speeding has been reduced which enables better fuel consumption
which has seen a 45% reduction over the last 3 years.

5. SUMMARY:
Constant monitoring and informing drivers about misuses of the company
vehicles is essential to maintain better awareness to maintain better driving
standards. Monitoring vehicles under Plant Department control improvement are
constantly made but for other operational vehicles the information is fragment as it
is not under one roof to have close liaison with operations for more efficiency.
In the period of time that the IVMS system has been installed fuel costs have
been reduced, traffic violations reduced better driving awareness has increased to
improve driving standards, vehicle tracking and utilization has improved especially to
Plant support vehicles for site issues to reduce response timing.
