Ivan was born in Kazakhstan and began studying judo there. When he was 9, his family moved to Barnaul, Russia, where he continued his judo training and schooling. He had coaches including Igor Votyakov and Dmitry Sergeyev. Ivan won gold at the 2009 World Championships in Rotterdam and bronze at the 2012 London Olympics in the men's 81kg category, defeating Japanese wrestler Takahiro Nakai. He also won the prestigious "World Masters" tournament in Tyumen, Russia in 2013.
