I’d like to tell you about a men that despite
the tragedy which occurred in his life made a
promise to himself to be happy, he achieved high
goals in sport and now he is dreaming of victory
at the Sochi Olympics.
We are talking about Sergey Alexandrov,
who is 31 and lives in St. Petersburg.
Before the tragedy he had worked as a
photographer, keen on geography, going in for
mountaineering and extreme tourism.
On May 19 th 2009 climbing onto
Elbrus he lost his safety devices and
fell down from the height of 5,5
kilometers. After flying around 2 km
down he found himself in a small crack
covered with snow and ice.

The rescuers arrived 20 hours
later and transported Sergey to
hospital. His legs were broken in 3
places as well as gangrene and
frostbite started. The only way to
save his life was amputation.
After discharge from the hospital, the
prosthetist doctor Mihail Moskvoretskiy made
very special German prosthesis for Sergey.
At the beginning the pain was excruciating,
however, Sergey chose the most difficult way:
to work hard to over come the pain and do
sport of course! More than that, he decided to
go in for sport professionally!
In 2010 he got interested in mountain skiing
and entered Lesgaft, the University
of physical culture in St. Petersburg.

Now, Sergey is the only Russian
skier on two prostheses.
He became a prize-winner of the
championship of Russia on mountain
skiing for the disabled athletes with
these types of disabilities.
“don’t expect from me a confession of a poor
invalid” smiles sergey, “i have been living
without legs for 4 years already and I was in
Norwegian mountains, volcanoes on
Kamchatka and other places. I can go on
slopes with a backpack weighing 30 kg. for 10
hours non-stop. I have got special prosthesis,
shortly, the iron feet are cool!”
Sergey trains from dawn till dusk, and
deliberately makes his dream come true
– to join the Olympic team and win the
Olympics in Sochi.

The end.
