The Italian town of Rapallo on the Italian Riviera has a mild climate and palm-tree lined beaches, making it a popular year-round destination, and it has been inhabited since the 8th century BC. Many historical peace treaties were signed in Rapallo. The town contains numerous ancient structures including fortifications and religious buildings as well as homes of its 34,000 residents. It was also known as the part-time home of prominent philosophers, artists, and authors. The seaside castle was built in 1551 to defend against pirates and now symbolizes the city.
