Facts Amazon.com Inc is a US based multinational electronic commerce company. It’s headquarters are in Seattle, Washington and it is the largest online retailer in the United States with nearly three times the Internet revenue of the runner up, Staples Inc. (as of January 2010)
Founder The found of Amazon is a man called Jeff Bezos. It was founded in 1994 and launched online in 1995. The company was originally named Cadabra Inc but the name was changed when it was discovered that people sometimes heard the name as Cadaver.
Why the Name? The Name Amazon.com was chosen because the Amazon river is one of the largest rivers in the world, and so the name suggests the large size, and also in part because it starts with ‘A’ and therefore would show up near the beginning of the alphabetical lists.
How it Started Amazon started as an online bookstore, but soon diversified selling DVDs, CDs, MP3 downloads, computer software, video games, electronics, apparel, furniture, food and toys. Amazon has established separate websites in Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Japan and China. It also provides international shipping to certain countries for some of its products.
History Bezos founded Amazon because he lost out in the gold rush and wanted to recuperate what he had lost. The A-Z in amazon’s name is supposed to signify every product in the alphabet which is what Bezos (the founder) set as a goal.
What They Own Amazon has grown from a small website into one of the largest online shops in the world. If not the largest. The company that own amazon.com also own: Amazon Studios Amazon Web Services A2Z Development A9.com Alexa Internet Audible.com Endless.com IMDb Kindle Lovefilm
The Website Amazon employs website designers around the world including England, Ireland, Bangalore, Chennai, India, South Africa, Japan, China and The United States. The U.S. website attracts over 65 millions customers per month. That’s over 780 million customers a year, in America Alone! That means huge profits! However because of this the company has had to invest a lot of money into the servers to handle the excessive traffic.
So Why is Amazon.com so Popular There is no specific answer to this question. However in my view it is down to a number of reasons. It started at the right time. First website that brought together products from around the world and started at the right time to do so. Had ambitions Did not start in a recession. Well marketed and had determination
The Experience In my view Amazon.com is not like most other websites. Not because of it’s huge size. But because it captures a similar experience to that of going into a real shop. And of course because of its extremely competitive prices!
Conclusion There are many reasons to Amazons success. Amazon is a great website, that has inspired thousands However In my opinion it may be getting too large to sustain!

Editor's Notes

  1. Commerce is like an online shop.
  2. The inspiration behind amazon that that Bezos (the founder_ regretted that he did not take a stake in the gold rush and so instead he created this.Since 2000, Amazon’s logotype is an arrow leading from A to Z, representing everything in the alphabet… every product in the world. A goal he set was to have every product in the alphabet.Amazon’s initial business plan was unusual and the company did not expect a profit for four to five year but turned its first profit in 2001 of 5 million dollars (1 cent per share) and revenue of more than $1 billion. This modest profit demonstrated that the business model was successful and Bezos was recognised for popularizing online shopping.
