o 2011 – 2014 number of recorded vacancies doubled,
o The number of teachers leaving rose by 11%
o The proportion leaving for reasons other than retirement increased
from 64% to 75%
o These figures are higher in some geographical areas and subject
specialisms than others
o The Government has failed to reach its recruitment targets for the last
four years – for example, they were short of 1055 physics training
places

1.Successful forms of CPD are hard to do – require change of system and culture
2. Successful CPD needs systemic support. Time ..
3.Video can be used to allow Joyce and Showers and remove system barriers
4.Film club model allows non-threatening discussion as precursor to
feedback/coaching
5. Change is a process not an event
6. Culture of trust and needs to be echoed in both classroom and professional
learning
7. Time and budget needs to be prioritized – reallocated to what works
8. Teachers need to feel safe with professional learning

1. In ear (other forms of coaching) need pre-condition of professional efficacy –
trust, empathy and involving pupils
2. Because of the programme, NQT felt wanted and involved
3. Interest and need for bespoke CPD for your school and for NQts
4. What is effective CPD? Collaboration leading to solidarity and accountability
5. Successful coaching is a whole school initiative
6. Too often, teacher learning is divorced from pupil learning
7. Need to claim OUR knowledge base – coaching is one way of doing this
8. Trust and relationships are key to effective coaching

1. Confused routes into teaching – need to simplify
2. Love the one you have
3. Offer a personalized development programme that makes people feel valued
4. Create the necessary structures and plan accordingly to allow professional
learning to happen
5. No blame culture
6. Freedom as professionals
7. Even great schools have difficulty in recruitment – maybe too many subjects?
8. Why are men and ethnic minorities under represented

1. Coaching is critical to creating a learning and development culture
2. We are constantly learning
3.Learning must take place in the classroom, over time with others
4.Rather than being disruptive – to having the time to partake in professional
learning should be the thing that IS disruptive
5.Accountability is about outcomes not methods. Need to build this into process of
professional learning
6. Co-evaluation of knowledge as well as co-creation
7. Accessing and sharing the tacit knowledge of teachers

  • 11. Issues from the Breakout sessions Recruit, Train, Develop, Retain. 1.Successful forms of CPD are hard to do – require change of system and culture 2. Successful CPD needs systemic support. Time .. 3.Video can be used to allow Joyce and Showers and remove system barriers 4.Film club model allows non-threatening discussion as precursor to feedback/coaching 5. Change is a process not an event 6. Culture of trust and needs to be echoed in both classroom and professional learning 7. Time and budget needs to be prioritized – reallocated to what works 8. Teachers need to feel safe with professional learning #ShapingCPD
  • 12. Issues from coaching and NQTs Recruit, Train, Develop, Retain. 1. In ear (other forms of coaching) need pre-condition of professional efficacy – trust, empathy and involving pupils 2. Because of the programme, NQT felt wanted and involved 3. Interest and need for bespoke CPD for your school and for NQts 4. What is effective CPD? Collaboration leading to solidarity and accountability 5. Successful coaching is a whole school initiative 6. Too often, teacher learning is divorced from pupil learning 7. Need to claim OUR knowledge base – coaching is one way of doing this 8. Trust and relationships are key to effective coaching #ShapingCPD
  • 13. Issues from Recruitment and Retention Recruit, Train, Develop, Retain. 1. Confused routes into teaching – need to simplify 2. Love the one you have 3. Offer a personalized development programme that makes people feel valued 4. Create the necessary structures and plan accordingly to allow professional learning to happen 5. No blame culture 6. Freedom as professionals 7. Even great schools have difficulty in recruitment – maybe too many subjects? 8. Why are men and ethnic minorities under represented #ShapingCPD
  • 14. Issues from school led research and development of culture Recruit, Train, Develop, Retain. 1. Coaching is critical to creating a learning and development culture 2. We are constantly learning 3.Learning must take place in the classroom, over time with others 4.Rather than being disruptive – to having the time to partake in professional learning should be the thing that IS disruptive 5.Accountability is about outcomes not methods. Need to build this into process of professional learning 6. Co-evaluation of knowledge as well as co-creation 7. Accessing and sharing the tacit knowledge of teachers #ShapingCPD
