BR1M is a public welfare program introduced in Malaysia in 2012 that provides cash payments of RM 500 directly into the bank accounts of eligible poorer households. It aims to help 5.2 million households and was allocated RM 2.6 billion in its first year. While BR1M has been successful in directly assisting the low income population, some critics argue it has failed to connect with the people as a whole and does not address the root causes of poverty.

1. Is BR1M a success in Malaysia?
They say a problem well defined is half solved. Nothing can be said better than this when it
comes to BR1M or BRIM. People having no knowledge about the Malaysian socioeconomic
and the political situation will be flummoxed hearing BR1M. Well, BR1M stands for Bantuan
Rakyat 1 Malaysia. It is essentially a public welfare programme especially for the poorer
section of the society by the current Prime Minister (PM) of Malaysia Datuk Seri Najib Tun
Razak. It was introduced in 2012 and the amount doled out in the same year was RM 2.6
billion to 5.2 million households in Malaysia.
The Barisan National Government of Malaysia has introduced the fair means of distributing
the money to the poorer section of the society through the direct credit of the amount RM
500 into the bank accounts of the eligible rakyat (people). This essentially eradicates the
middlemen’s role for the purpose.
However, all these put together shouldn’t be construed that Malaysia suffers from the
extreme poverty and hunger. Malaysia rather put an end to them and witnessed
extraordinary economic growth in the last three decades. If you look at the per capita GDP
(Gross Domestic Product) of Malaysia since 1975 till 1998, you will be simply awestruck.
According to the United Nations Human Development Report 2000, per capita GDP of
Malaysia was US $ 1,750 in 1975 and the same touched a whopping figure of US $ 4,251 in
1998.

According to a report, BRIM, in particular, is very popular among the low income group
especially to those whose monthly income fall within RM 2000. But, the crux is that the
programme has failed to connect with the people as a whole. In an informal opinion poll
consisting 100 people for the next PM of Malaysia, Ex-PM Dr. Mahathir came out as the
winner for 2016 poll.
