This document presents a study analyzing the fatigue strength of spur gears made from different materials using finite element analysis (FEA). Spur gears made from structural steel and an aluminum matrix composite reinforced with spherical alumina particles were modeled and their behavior was simulated under varying torque loads. The FEA results for von-mises stress, fatigue life, and safety factor were compared between the two materials. The analysis found that the composite material gear experienced lower stresses and had a longer fatigue life than the steel gear. Therefore, the composite material showed better performance and is a suitable alternative to structural steel for spur gears.
