CREATIVE PLACEMAKING: Thinking Beyond Projects
In the words of a recent National Endowment for the Arts report, Creative Placemaking animates public and private spaces, rejuvenates structures and streetscapes, improves local business viability and public safety, and brings diverse people together to celebrate, inspire, and be inspired.
Arts and culture have been a part of community revitalization and economic development strategies for years. Creative Placemaking is more than a new term for this effort -- at its highest levels, it involves a new way of thinking about the role of creativity in making society more sustainable. It is not just about doing projects -- it is also about the thinking behind the projects and about making stronger connections between creative, community and economic development.
Learn from experts and practitioners who have been at the heart of efforts to use creativity to grow communities and get a sneak peek at Creative Placemaking in action. Our three panelists will provide some helpful examples of what they have done in their communities:
Steve Dalhberg, is director of the Connecticut-based International Centre for Creativity and Imagination, vice president of innovation for Future Workplace, and faculty of "Creativity + Social Change" at the University of Connecticut.
Leonardo Vazquez, AICP/PP is the Director of Arts Build Communities at Rutgers University. He will discuss Rutgers¹ community coaching program and ABC¹s new Master Practitioner Certificate Program in creative placemaking.
The Wormfarm Institute in Sauk County, Wisconsin, is rural creative placemaking at its best. It's a 40-acre organic vegetable farm and creative hub, begun 15 years ago by artists Jay Salinas and Donna Neuwirth. Wormfarm aims to recreate the link that once existed between culture and agriculture with innovative and intuitive efforts that center around a sense of the land and the community.

Digital Banking in the Cloud: How Citizens Bank Unlocked Their MainframePrecisely
Inconsistent user experience and siloed data, high costs, and changing customer expectations – Citizens Bank was experiencing these challenges while it was attempting to deliver a superior digital banking experience for its clients. Its core banking applications run on the mainframe and Citizens was using legacy utilities to get the critical mainframe data to feed customer-facing channels, like call centers, web, and mobile. Ultimately, this led to higher operating costs (MIPS), delayed response times, and longer time to market.
Ever-changing customer expectations demand more modern digital experiences, and the bank needed to find a solution that could provide real-time data to its customer channels with low latency and operating costs. Join this session to learn how Citizens is leveraging Precisely to replicate mainframe data to its customer channels and deliver on their “modern digital bank” experiences.

Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity serverAntonios Katsarakis
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).

AB OUT TH E TE D P R IZ E
The first TED Prize was awarded in 2005, born out of the TED Conference and a vision by the world's
leading entrepreneurs, innovators, and entertainers to change the world – one Wish at a time.
The reward: $100,000, the TED Community's array of talent and expertise, and the leadership of a TED
Prize team led by Amy Novogratz. What began as an unparalleled experiment to leverage the resources
of the TED Community to spur global change has evolved into one of the most prestigious prizes.
From Bono's the ONE Campaign ('05 recipient) to Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution ('10 recipient), the
TED Prize is helping to combat poverty, take on religious intolerance, improve global health, tackle child
obesity, advance education, and now inspire art around the world.

“BE THE CHANGE”
We find ourselves at a very interesting crossroads. During this time of accelerated globalization and
rapid changes in our environment, people in countries around the world are being affected in different
ways. Now, more than ever, we have a responsibility to share the human stories that unite us as world
citizens.
Via JR’s Inside Out Project, we are joining forces with individuals and groups in countries around the
world to bring awareness to the issues we want to change, as well as inspire creative solutions to
make these changes possible. It is time for us as co-producers, artists and global citizens to engage
in a dialogue to help reorganize systems of urban interaction and challenge the existing frameworks.
We believe this change must come from within each individual in order for us to move forward
collectively and bring about positive change worldwide.
We invite the growing silent majority to be part of this “global ex-change” by becoming more globally
conscious and proactive in their daily lives. On World Peace Day, which takes place on September
21,2012 (TBC), the world will unite through the exchange of portraits from country to country which will
not only create a mosaic of faces, but an ongoing collaborative dialogue, using art and communication
as catalysts for social change.
P O R T R A IT D E T A IL S
Each participating country will produce 500 portraits (a specific number of portraits from each country
will then be redistributed (% relative to the number of countries participating) creating a mosaic of
faces from around the world (For example, Athens will have 15-20 portraits from Greece, 15-20 from
Mexico, 15-20 from Israel, etc.)
Each portrait will be uploaded on the Inside Out Project Website and will include the person’s first
name, location, and a personal message relating to their respective human, natural and urban
environment, in the format of a wish or a statement
The general public will be invited to participate through an open call and local and social media
networks
Additionally, large-scale posters representing the 5 participating continents will be given to each
group and posted in emblematic locations in the city center (TBC pending budget and local logistics
on the ground)

pending local permits)
Via an open call, volunteers from the city’s community will be invited to help paste the portraits
These events will be broadcasted live on the respective TEDx platforms. We are currently in
discussion with our global partner, Ikono.tv, to broadcast the entire event live, jumping from one
country to the next over 24 hours.
PARALLEL EVENTS
Local IOP actions will join forces with respective TEDx chapters and will host a series of talks on
the ground (format to be determined with local TEDx chapter), inviting experts from the social
sciences, artists and community leaders, among others, to inspire awareness, build education and
find creative solutions to the climate crisis
Participating TEDx chapters will have the opportunity to invite a group leader from a different
country to speak about the action in a TEDxTalk
A “live message stand” : We invite every chapter to have a podium during their photo shoot and
pasting where people will be invited to “say something nice …exact theme TBD” These messages
will be recorded as archival material, creating a series of podcasts.
ONLINE PRESENCE
