Lester William Polfus, better known as Les Paul, is considered the inventor of the solid-body electric guitar. He was born in 1915 in Waukesha, Wisconsin and started playing various instruments such as harmonica, piano, guitar and banjo from a young age. Paul experimented with early solid body models in the 1940s but the idea was rejected by Gibson. In 1952, the Les Paul guitar was a commercial success and helped popularize the solid body electric guitar design.
