In a highly distributed world it is crucial to have the best possible insights into your application.
In the old days we achieved this using plain logging and jmx. This does not scale well to highly distributed processing like in microservices though.
This talk shows how to pimp you OSGi based systems with top notch monitoring and tracing capabilities. Using Apache Karaf Decanter we let karaf instances log into a common elastic search instance with almost zero effort and get insights using kibana. The Apache CXF REST and SOAP integrations allow to log and correlate service requests and replies.
Building on top of this we use the OSGi based reactive components framework and reactor.io streams to provide complex event processing capabilties. A typical use case for this is to describe and monitor service level agreements.

Data Pipelining Across AWS and GCP
Several considerations for data pipelining across AWS and GCP include ease of use, speed, and cost. While AWS may be easier to use and cheaper in general, GCP offers services that are fully-managed and have faster data processing. The two cloud providers also differ in their data warehouse approaches, with Redshift using a schema-on-write model and BigQuery using schema-on-read.

One of the first problems a developer encounters when evaluating a graph database is how to construct a graph efficiently. Recognizing this need in 2014, TinkerPop's Stephen Mallette penned a series of blog posts titled "Powers of Ten" which addressed several bulkload techniques for Titan. Since then Titan has gone away, and the open source graph database landscape has evolved significantly. Do the same approaches stand the test of time? In this session, we will take a deep dive into strategies for loading data of various sizes into modern Apache TinkerPop graph systems. We will discuss bulkloading with JanusGraph, the scalable graph database forked from Titan, to better understand how its architecture can be optimized for ingestion. Google Cloud Dataflow meets TensorFlow
Google Cloud Dataflow can be used to build TensorFlow pipelines. Dataflow allows training multiple TensorFlow models in parallel and writing results to Cloud Datastore. A sample pipeline shows generating training parameters, mapping over them to train models, and writing accuracy results to Cloud Storage. Dataflow provides autoscaling and machine types can be configured. The new DatastoreIO allows reading from and writing to Cloud Datastore from Dataflow pipelines using Protobuf and entity conversion helpers.

The GraphQL Ecosystem in 2018

GraphQL is a query language mostly used to streamline access to REST APIs. It is seeing tremendous growth and adoption, in organizations like Airbnb, Coursera, Docker, GitHub, Twitter, Uber, and Facebook, where it was invented.
As REST APIs are proliferating, the promise of accessing them all through a single query language and hub, which is what GraphQL and GraphQL server implementations bring, is alluring.
A significant recent addition to GraphQL was SDL, its schema definition language. SDL enables developers to define a schema governing interaction with the back-end that GraphQL servers can then implement and enforce.
Prisma is a productized version of the data layer leveraging GraphQL to access any database. Prisma works with MySQL, Postgres, and MongoDB, and is adding to this list.
Prisma sees the GraphQL community really coming together around the idea of schema-first development, and wants to use GraphQL SDL as the foundation for all interfaces between systems.

GraphQL - A query language to empower your API consumers (NDC Sydney 2017)
The shift to microservices, cloud native and rich web apps have made it challenging to deliver compelling API experiences. REST, as specified in Roy Fielding’s seminal dissertation, has become the architectural pattern of choice for APIs and when applied correctly allows for clients and servers to evolve in a loosely coupled manner. There are areas however where REST can deliver less than ideal client experiences. Often many HTTP requests are required to render a single view.
While this may be a minor concern for a web app running on a WAN with low latency and high bandwidth, it can yield poor client experiences for mobile clients in particular. GraphQL is Facebook’s response to this challenge and it is quickly proving itself as an exciting alternative to RESTful APIs for a wide range of contexts. GraphQL is a query language that provides a clean and simple syntax for consumers to interrogate your APIs. These queries are strongly types, hierarchical and enable clients to retrieve only the data they need.
In this session, we will take a hands-on look at GraphQL and see how it can be used to build APIs that are a joy to use.

GraphQL Schema Stitching with Prisma & Contentful
GraphQL schema stitching allows combining multiple GraphQL APIs into a single API. It uses schema delegation under the hood. Prisma is a GraphQL API layer that can be used to stitch a headless Contentful CMS with a database. This provides a unified GraphQL API and makes building complex apps and managing content easier. The presentation demonstrated exploring Contentful's GraphQL API with bindings, auto-generated clients, and stitching Contentful to a database with Prisma.

Microservices, RESTful and API-first architectures are rage these days and rightfully so, they solve some of the challenges of modern application development. Microservices enable organisations in shipping code to production faster and is accomplished by dividing big monolithic applications into smaller but specialised applications. Though they provide great benefits, they are difficult to debug and secure in complex environments (different API versions, multiple API calls and frontend/backend gaps etc.,). GraphQL provides a powerful way to solve some of these challenges but with great power, comes great responsibility. GraphQL reduces the attack surface drastically(thanks to LangSec) but there are still many things which can go wrong.
This talk will cover the risks associated with GraphQL, challenges and solutions, which help in implementing Secure GraphQL based APIs. We will start off with introduction to GraphQL and its benefits. We then discuss the difficulty in securing these applications and why traditional security scanners don’t work with them. At last, we will cover solutions which help in securing these API by shifting left in DevOps pipeline.

Dandelion Hashtable: beyond billion requests per second on a commodity server
This slide deck presents DLHT, a concurrent in-memory hashtable. Despite efforts to optimize hashtables, that go as far as sacrificing core functionality, state-of-the-art designs still incur multiple memory accesses per request and block request processing in three cases. First, most hashtables block while waiting for data to be retrieved from memory. Second, open-addressing designs, which represent the current state-of-the-art, either cannot free index slots on deletes or must block all requests to do so. Third, index resizes block every request until all objects are copied to the new index. Defying folklore wisdom, DLHT forgoes open-addressing and adopts a fully-featured and memory-aware closed-addressing design based on bounded cache-line-chaining. This design offers lock-free index operations and deletes that free slots instantly, (2) completes most requests with a single memory access, (3) utilizes software prefetching to hide memory latencies, and (4) employs a novel non-blocking and parallel resizing. In a commodity server and a memory-resident workload, DLHT surpasses 1.6B requests per second and provides 3.5x (12x) the throughput of the state-of-the-art closed-addressing (open-addressing) resizable hashtable on Gets (Deletes).
