What I call multi-homed applications are cloud-based applications that don't reside solely on the web, the desktop or in the phone, but work across all of these platforms, exploiting the advantages and coping with the disadvantages of each. This is, in my view, an emerging characteristic that is common for many of the apps we use every day and become really attached to, and hence something that users will increasingly require from new apps

Implementation of a disaster recovery (DR) site is crucial for the business continuity of any enterprise. Due to the fundamental nature of features like elasticity, scalability, and geographic distribution, DR implementation on AWS can be done at 10-50% of the conventional cost. In this session, we do a deep dive into proven DR architectures on AWS and the best practices, tools and techniques to get the most out of them.

Presented at DevIntersection / AngleBrackets 2014. I showed how to set up, develop and run NoSQL solutions for the cloud on Windows and Linux using Windows Azure. Also show you how to build multi-tier applications in the cloud that access NoSQL data. This session included an introduction to our Platform-as-a-Service offerings for MongoDB and CouchDB, as well as prepackaged Linux VMs that run Cassandra, Riak, Redis and other NoSQL data stores with a few clicks. We’ll also introduce you to the Developer Centers for Windows Azure, the Azure SDKs, our selection of plugins for popular open source developer tools, DevOps services, and other tools and materials we’ve developed to make life easier for application developers.
Optimize DR and Cloning with Logical Hostnames in Oracle E-Business Suite (OA...Andrejs Prokopjevs
This presentation covers the idea of logical hostname feature and its possible use case with E-Business Suite, why it is a must-have configuration for DR, how it can improve your test/dev instance cloning and lifecycle processes, especially in a cloud deployment, support overview by 11i/R12.0/R12.1, and why it is a very hot topic right now for R12.2. Additionally, we will describe possible advanced configuration scenarios like container based virtualization. The content is based on real client environment implementation experience.
Bootstrapping your applications in Microsoft Azure sometimes requires more than just running a VM and starting your application via script/extension. At times your application would need to know which instance certain services need to run and the current size of VM. How do you know information about the location of the VM when you get a support call for your application? Azure Instance Metadata provides information like VMName, location, IP address, etc. for a running VM on Azure via a REST endpoint.

Deploying containerized client-side web applications requires a different configuration strategy compared to system applications. The runtime of client-side web applications is the client-side web browser and, unlike other applications which can utilize environment values, configuration has to be hard-coded in the Javascript source code.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!
Generating a custom Ruby SDK for your web service or Rails API using Smithyg2nightmarescribd
Have you ever wanted a Ruby client API to communicate with your web service? Smithy is a protocol-agnostic language for defining services and SDKs. Smithy Ruby is an implementation of Smithy that generates a Ruby SDK using a Smithy model. In this talk, we will explore Smithy and Smithy Ruby to learn how to generate custom feature-rich SDKs that can communicate with any web service, such as a Rails JSON API.
