For Aristotle, all things are composed of matter and form. Matter has potential but no actuality until shaped by form. Form actualizes matter. Descartes rejected Aristotelian forms and distinguished mind from body. He argued that the innate idea of a perfect, infinite God is the cause of our ideas about perfection in the world.
