the software.
– The cost of acquisition to end-user is ofter minimal.

8. The stride towards Freedom
● 1984 : Richard Stallman kicks off the GNU project.
● 1985 : Richard Stallman starts Free Software Foundation.
● 1989 : Release of GNU (GNU's Not Unix!).
● 1989 : Release of GNU GPL Version 1.
● 1991 : Linus Torvalds announces the release of Linux
Kernel.

software
● Modified software version should be licensed
under GNU GPL license (copyleft).

● Free Software is not same as Open Source
● Is reflected in the name of Free Software
Foundation (FSF), an organization founded in
1985 to protect and promote free software.
● The term “open source” was coined in 1998 by
a group of people – the founders of the Open
Source Initiative (OSI).

● Fedora Core: Stable, secure, user
friendly, easy to install. Frequent full
releases.
● Ubuntu Linux: The growing community
distribution. Debian based but stable
releases every 6 months. User friendly.
Great for beginners.
● Chitwanix: Based on Ubuntu in different
Nepali taste. Having 40,000+ applications
available on different ISPs of Nepal.
Clean, Stable, per-installed day-to-day
packages suitable for Nepali Users
