Conduct an interview on the experiences of teaching and learning a mother tongue
SUBJECT STRUGGLES RESOLUTION
TEACHERS As a teacher in Grade 2, I've
been struggling with teaching
the mother tongue because
some learners are not able to
understand deep words, and
also because there's a lack of
publications written in the
mother tongue which hinder
the enhancement of the
reading, listening, speaking
and writing skills of the
learners, vocabulary deficits,
and I also have a lack of
teacher training just because
I've not reached the
implementation of the
mother tongue subject (MTB-
MLE) when I was a college
student, but if others think it
is easy because it is our own
language. No, there are still
many words that are difficult
to understand. As a result,
I'm having a difficult time
teaching and learning
mother tongue in a variety of
A teacher should be
understandable and
knowledgeable enough in
order to teach students well.
So, as a teacher, my
resolution is to adjust and
explain the deep words so
that they can understand and
focus on their studies. As we
all know, children learn
better and faster in a
language they can
understand, but they need a
guide to help them achieve
their goal. So, even though I
have a lack of teacher
training in mother tongue,
there's a strategy wherein I
can teach students to learn. I
used strategies such as:
translation of target language
to mother tongue, utilization
of multilingual teaching,
utilization of lingua-franca,
improvisation of instructional
materials written in mother

instruction, and utilization of
literary pieces written in
mother tongue as motivation.
LEARNERS As a learner, learning mother
tongue is somehow
challenging and interesting in
a way that there are so many
words and phrases that I do
not know or understand,
even if it is my native
language, especially when
there are unfamiliar words or
words that have deep
meanings. Learning a mother
tongue is not that hard at all
because it is our native
language, but because of
technologies, influences from
other nations, and modern
things, we actually forget
some basic words of our
dialect and the functions of
it.
I still make mistakes, even in
my own language. So, my
resolution is to ask my
parents what the meaning of
those unfamiliar and deep
words is or to search it on
Google to find the meaning
of those words. The mother
tongue (MTB-MLE) is a good
stepping stone for second
language acquisition.
However, there should be
enough books that are
written in the mother tongue,
enough training for the
teachers, and enough
resources and materials that
the teachers could use in
schools.
