Intertextuality in music videos
1. Intertextuality in Music Videos
Intertextuality in a music video is when one video references another video using a similar style or
technique, or it takes the mick out of that video.
Examples
One very well know example is the Shania Twain video “Man! I feel like a women” which takes the
mick out of the video “Addicted to love” by Robert Palmer. It does this as the Palmer video uses the
stereotypical sexy women as the band whereas the Twain video features men looking a similar way
which subverts the gender stereotype.

However a more fitting example would be the mick take of Alien Ant Farms video “Smooth Criminal”
of Michael Jacksons video “Smooth Criminal.

Influences
Intertextuality has influenced our video as we will usual a similar style of production to that of Royal
Bloods other videos like ‘Out of the black’ and ‘Come on Over’. One of our main influences was the
song “Dance, Dance” by Fall out Boy as it has part performance and narrative style video. It also links
in with our rock genre and has the typical rock style that we will use in our video.
