2. PAN’S LABYRINTH
The 2006 film Pan’s Labyrinth is a fantasy drama film directed by Guillermo
del Torro. The film was set in 1944, where a book loving stepdaughter of
an army officer escapes into a scary and enchanting fantasy world. The
main character in the film is a young girl called Ofelia who is found
embarking on a quest to a fantasy world by an ambiguous trickster.
We decided to take inspiration from Pan’s Labyrinth by casting a young girl
as our lead character in our music video, much like in the film. Much
like Pan’s Labyrinth our video is all about exploring the theme of
escapism as the character in our video stumbles upon a door which
leads her into a fantasy world.
During Pan’s Labyrinth, the girl becomes a woman when entering the
fantasy world and discovering that the rules of the world are untrue.
She returns home. Similarly, our music video turns full circle where our
character ends up back at the door she started at. This creates a
journey that the audience feels like they can follow.
3. ALICE IN WONDERLAND – THE NOVEL
Alice in Wonderland started out as a novel written by Lewis Carroll. The
story is of a young girl called Alice, who, falls down a rabbit hole into a
fantasy world which is full of unusual scenarios and objects. Chapter 7
features the Mad Hatters tea party where a grand and majestic table of
food lies before Alice. We have used this as inspiration for our video in
order to represent an ‘Acquired Taste; of food.
The music video of ‘Rabbit Heart’ by Florence and the Machine, the mad
hatters tea party is represented, this shows t a sense of illusion much
like in Alice in Wonderland. We want to achieve a style like this in our
video
The character of Alice has influenced our decisions about the female
character in our video. In reviews of the book, Alice is described to be
‘wildly curious’ and ‘imaginative’ we would like our character to show
these characteristics. Alice’s costume has also influenced the costume
we have chosen for our character, with a fairy tale style dress and
ribbon in her hair.
4. ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS - FILM
Alice Through the Looking Glass (2016) is an upcoming American
adventure-fantasy film directed by James Bobbin, written by Linda
Woolverton and produced by Tim Burton. It is based on Through the
Looking – Glass by Lewis Carroll and is the sequel to the 2010 film Alice
in Wonderland.
From our initial ideas, we decided that we wanted to include a tree, where
our character would have to decide which way she could go, I found a
picture on social media which perfectly represented the idea that we
wanted while still referencing the Alice in wonderland theme, the image
below is a concept image from the upcoming film Alice Through The
Looking Glass
