their knowledge of marketing, social media, and/or graphic design to
develop the community reach of Powerhouse Gym East Lansing. The
intern will be responsible for collecting and developing media content
and text that reflects the culture of the business. Interns will work as a
team with each other and current staff to achieve these goals. Weekly

ACHIEVING
ADVERTISING
OBJECTIVES:
Hosting A Social Media Contest –
Gabe and I held our first ever contest giveaway on Instagram the
week of November 15th. We also promoted the contest on Facebook.
To win a free month gym membership and Powerhouse t-shirt, people
had to like us on Facebook, follow us on Instagram, and tag
@powerhousegymel in one of their Instagram gym pictures. Quite a
few people got involved and the contest was a success.
We received 5 new page likes on the Facebook page. The posts for
the week also had a 38.8% increase in total reach from previous week.
ACHIEVING
ADVERTISING
OBJECTIVES:
I posted about the following topics regularly to increase
engagement and page likes –
• #MotivationalMonday
• Funny Gym Memes
• Articles on cardio & fat burning
• #TrainerTuesday & Personal Training offers
• Nutrition Articles
• Articles on specific muscle group workouts
• #FlexFriday
• Shared group fitness class information & monthly schedules
• Special gym offerings & deals
• Articles on stretching
BLOGGING & LEARNING
FROM OTHERS:
• Blogging allowed me to not only reflect on my
experience but also share prevalent information on
Advertising-related material
• I enjoyed sharing advertisements I saw that were of
interest to me and interested other students as well. It
was beneficial to address and analyze popular ads of
today.
• It was nice to share happenings from my internship,
such as free fitness classes that were offered, to
students on the blog; hopefully someone took
advantage of the offering!
BLOGGING & LEARNING
FROM OTHERS:
• I learned that every student, along with myself, was
working extra hard to balance schoolwork and an
internship while planning for their futures.
• It was interesting to learn what other students were doing
as part of their internships. It was informational to read
about other students’ experiences and learn from them
myself.
• Overall, it was nice to learn about others’ experiences
along with my own and have a place to be open and
reflective about them.
WHAT I LEARNED:
• Having a structure/outline to work from when posting on social
media is not only helpful, but also allows postings to be
consistent to the audience.
• Promoting events, specifically group fitness classes, is more
engaging if you can describe and show (with a picture or video)
what happens at the class so the audience can have a “preview”
of what the class entails.
• Personal training is a major gym offer that is beneficial to
advertise. The highly qualified staff at Powerhouse is something
to advertise specifically.
• Free happenings, such as fitness classes or a free personal
training consultation with the purchase of a membership, are
gym benefits that should be promoted.
WHAT I LEARNED (CONT.):
• I learned that the fitness industry appeals to a very specific
audience that can receive great engagement when sharing
information on fitness, nutrition, the healthy lifestyle, and other
workout information including articles and recommended
workouts.
• The internship was never boring or dull. There was always
information to share or events to promote which was exciting.
• Social media is always changing – being able to share articles,
create flyers and videos, and post pictures allowed variety in my
responsibilities.
• I learned that representing a company through social media is
very interactive and gives you the ability to encourage
engagement and action – something I find great about social
media.
CONCLUSION:
This internship only furthered my interest in social media
management.
I was able to enhance my skills by being creative on multiple
social media outlets.
It was wonderful working for Powerhouse Gym East Lansing
and promoting the great things the gym does and provides
for its members.
My goal after this internship & graduating in May: obtain a
social media management position for a company or agency.
