2. Uganda prisons service is a statutory organization under the ministry of
internal affairs responsible for the safe custody of prisoners in Uganda
as well as their welfare, reformation and rehabilitation, with a duty to
protect, promote and fulfill the rights of those incarcerated.
Uganda prisons started around 1995 and it was established by the
British government in cooperation with Uganda Government to promote
civilization.
It constitutes of the different departments and among the following are;
Registrar’s department, Pension department, Human Resource among
others
3. Mission ; To contribute to the protection and develop society
by safe, secure and humane custody of offenders while
placing human rights at the center of correctional programs.
Vision; Excellence in providing human rights based
correctional service in Uganda
Goal; To promote, fulfill the rights of those incarcerated
They have a duty to protect
Core values; To behave in a manner that confirms with the
rules and regulations and codes of conduct and ethics.
4. Registrar’s department;
In this department, activities like organizing staff’s files, record keeping,
updating files and issuing out transfer letters of some staffs from a
former station to a current station are carried out
Pension department;
Pension is a basic payment given to government workers as a form of
appreciation at their retirement period. The department basically deals
with both retiring and retired prisons officers.
It has two categories i.e. Mandatory and Cease to Be Efficient
5. Based on the knowledge of sociology, below are the
reasons for my joining the Uganda prisons service;
To learn how the Uganda prisons provide services to
people who in needy like handling criminal offences
To learn ways which the officers at the station use to
make sure that offenders do not commit offences and
what activities do they engage in to improve on the skills
and knowledge while they are serving their punishments
I would like to know why there is gender bias at the
place of work for instance at the headquarters work is
dominated by male and above all commissioner general
of prison is a man
6. Record keeping and management,
Time management
Cooperation (interpersonal skills)
Exposure to their system of work
finishing assigned tasks on time, being
cooperative, following the code of conduct.
Team work
7. Limited resources; computers are few compared
to the users
There’s overcrowding; the space is small yet the
workers are many
There are heavy workloads and hence this
makes work unfinished
Boredom; that’s, doing the same tasks
repeatedly
8. More computers should be added in the offices
to solve the challenge of delays in work due to
few computers
They should expand and or construct more
buildings to reduce on overcrowding in the
offices
9. In conclusion therefore, working at Uganda
prisons Service has exposed me to the
different aspects in the lives prison staffs
and prisoners related to the community
perception about the same.
