Internship Paper
Fremont Animal Hospital
As a student at the Seacoast School of Technology, I was given the opportunity to go on an
internship. I was assigned to go to the Fremont Animal Hospital. While I was there, I was able
to learn about the business.
The animal hospital treats mainly companion animals – dogs and cats. Although, the owner, Dr.
Karen Karamourtopoulos – who happens to live next door to the hospital – has her cat, horse
and goats on the property. The Fremont Animal Hospital does not have much completion
where they are settled. The closet registered animal hospital is the Veterinary Emergency and
Surgery in Brentwood.

Today, I had a tour of the entire building. The place is much larger on the inside then it looks
like it would be on the outside! I was allowed to walk a Chihuahua named Butters – it was
interesting to learn that he was a diabetic. He needs special food to help to stay healthy.
May 24, 2013 12pm – 3pm
Today was an interesting day. I got to watch Dr. Chag give a tooth extraction to a Doberman.
His tooth had been split down the middle. Since the spilt down the underneath the gum, she
had to get the tooth out. I watched as she dug beneath the tooth till it came out. It was kind of
scary to see her twist and scoop it out! After it was out, she said I could keep the tooth.
May 25, 2013 12pm – 3pm
Today, I spent the whole day helping to unpack a major shipment in of medicine and food.
There were many different things – syringes, medicine bottles, empty containers, and many
more.
May 26, 2013 12pm – 3pm
Today, I spent the day learning about how the front office works. There is a ton of things they
do that I never understood. They call back to the vet techs and veterinarians about an
appointment ready, or about how an animal is here for a grooming or for a nail clipping.
Here, I am helping a vet tech put together a bottle of
medicine. I learned just how important it is that we
make sure we label the bottles correctly.
Here, I am helping to clean up after a tooth
extraction. Every single thing had to be cleaned.
Here is the Doberman I helped to prepare and
clean after in surgery. He is having the tooth extraction.
It was amazing to watch ad learn just how it was done.
While I was up front, though I was
unable to do much, I learned that
the front desk does loads of work.
