Executive summary
Everybody knows education is the most important thing. But, I believe experience
is equally important. I don’t know about other professions but when it comes to the
construction sector experience is very important. It helps us compare what we have
learned theoretically in class and what is really out there in the real world.
The internship program helps us students grasp knowledge we cannot get from
anywhere, even from class. We might learn about a certain topic in class and think we
know everything there is to know about the subject. But In reality, unless we get
experience, we can’t be certain we have enough knowledge to know about the subject.
Even most experienced professionals don’t know everything about a certain
construction subject. They may know the knowhow but, since conditions change from
one construction site to another they don’t know everything. So we future construction
managers are obligated to keep searching for knowledge and experience even after we
graduate.
When we start class in the next semester, I don’t think it will be the same as
before. We now know something about the construction industry so, I have no doubt it
will help us when we start class by making it easier.
The project I was working on during my internship program was a two block four
storey high condominium building. The construction company is called HAJA FEJ
construction and engineering. I was working on the contractor side.

Overall internship experience
How I get into the company
After the U.I.L office told us to find a construction company that was willing to
host us in the internship program, I immediately lipped into action by contacting one of
16
the project engineers at the company and the company accepted my request with open
arms. I didn’t have to look for other construction companies because I knew the
company had on-going projects which were exiting and also challenging.
The project engineer Farid Abdulsemed showed and told me about everything
that is found on site. He guided me well during the whole period of internship at the
construction site.
Which section of the company I have been working in
In a construction company there are mainly three sections or organs involved in
the construction system. These sections are the client, the consulting office and the
contractors. All these three sections have their own tasks and activity that are expected
from them to perform. As for my case, I have been working on the contractor’s side. In
the construction sector experience is the most important thing and I recommend
students to work on the contractor’s side if they want to get many experiences.
The construction company has won a bid to construct two blocks of condominium
buildings side by side. The contract is given to the construction company by Lideta sub.
City housing development office and the consultants are PACE consultant Architects
and Engineers Plc. The buildings are four storey high buildings each. The cost of the
building is estimated to be 4.5 million birr for each block.
I had been working on the construction site throughout my entire internship
period and I have to admit it was a little hard working on site. But then again
construction is hard and so I had to get used to it which I did.

Work piece or work tasks I have been executing
The work pieces or work tasks that I have been working during my internship
mostly includes reinforcement bar checks, concrete quality supervision, checking
dimensions of the structures, form work preparation and preparation of take off sheets
19
are some of them. These activities are mostly controlled by the site engineer. I am
always closely working with the site engineer and the foreman. They give me a chance
to control and check this work tasks. If I feel that some mistakes are made, I have to tell
the worker who is responsible for the mistake to take the correct measures otherwise I
had to immediately report to the foreman or the site engineer.
The reinforcement bar checks that are mostly to be checked include the number
of bars of main structures and alignment of the structures. These main structures
include columns, slabs, beams and stair case.
A column is a slender, vertical membrane that carries super imposed loads.
Concrete columns especially those subjected a bending stress must always reinforced
with a steel. In concrete column a vertical reinforcement is a principal reinforcement.
However a loaded column shorted vertical and expands laterally. Hence, lateral
reinforcement in the form of lateral tie is used to restrain the expansion. Columns
reinforced in this manner are called tied column.
Beams are principal load carrying horizontal member. They take the load directly
from the floor slabs and carry it into the columns .Concrete beams can either be cast in
situ or precast beams that are transported to the job site. Their reinforcement bars are
either straight or bent up. Principal reinforcing bars are needed to resist the bending
tension in the bottom over the central portion of the span. Fewer bars are necessary at
20
the bottom, near the end of the span, where the bending moment is small. For this
reason some bars may be bent so that the inclined portion can be used to resist
diagonal tensions. The reinforcement bars of continuous beams are continued across
the support to resist tensions in the top in that area. Staircase construction also needs
reinforcement bars but this reinforcement bars are more complex compared to that of
column and beams.
The quality of concrete is also another thing that I have to control. This quality is
basically affected by the mix ratio of the concrete. Since the proper mix ratio will give us
strong and durable concrete mix. To make a concrete there are four basic materials you
need. This are, cement (OPC and PPC), aggregate (gravel), sand and water. The ratio
of aggregate to sand to cement is important factor in determining the compressive
strength of concrete mixture. A concrete mix ratio of 1 part of cement, 2 part of sand,
and three part of aggregate will produce a concrete mix of approximately 25mpa or c-
25 concrete.
Mixing of water with cement, sand, and aggregate will produce or form a paste
that will bind the material together until the mix hardens. The strength property of a
concrete is inversely proportional to water to cement ratio.
21
Basically this means the more water you use to mix the concrete (very fluid) the
weaker the concrete mix and the less water you use to mix the concrete (somewhat dry
but workable) is the stronger the concrete mix.
Quantity takeoff sheet is another thing I do with my supervisors. When the
estimated work sheet is completed, it shows the various individual activities for the
project with the listing of the required material and material schedule for several
activities. The work sheet should also contain an activity description, an item number,
the material description, the cost, the unit of issues, the waste factors, the total quantity
and the remarks.
Finally I also got the chance to perform different kind of tests. These tastes are
mostly the silt or the jar test and the slump test. The jar test is very important to
determine the amount of silt content in sand.
The slump test is perhaps the most widely used method for checking the
consistency of concrete. Used at the construction site, it provides useful information on
22
the uniformity in the day to day or even hour to hour production of concrete. According
to Ethiopian standard the slump cone should be 305mm high, 203 and 102mm diameter
at the bottom and top respectively. After being moistened it is placed on a smooth
surface with ambler opening at the top, and filled with the concrete sample in three
layers. Each layer is tamped 25 times with standard straight tamping rod 16mm in
diameter and 60cm in length while the mould is held firmly against its base. Immediately
after filling the cone is gently lifted leaving the unsupported concrete to slump. The
consistency is measured in terms of the amount it has slumped in centimeter. Three
types of result could be obtained:
I. The sample could slump evenly all around in which case it is said to be a true
slump.
II. Part of the top cones might shear off and slide down and inclined plane giving a
shear slump
III. The cone could completely collapse.
The first type of slump indicates a well proportioned concrete where as the
second, or the shear slump, occurs usually with harsh mix with lack of cohesion.
Mixes of stiff consistence have a zero slump.
Procedures I used while performing my work tasks
Working hours of the site is from 8 A.M to 5 P.M with lunch break. As a team
member I was always working with the staff attentively. Every day before every member
of the team rushes to his own work, the site engineer gave me some sort of task to do
within a specified time and report to him if I face any difficulty when performing such
tasks.
It is true that “the best manager is the one who is planning better”. So that in
order to handle the work tasks I was given properly, I was always planning the work
schedule. I always discussed what approach to use to handle the work tasks I was
given with the site engineer who is also my supervisor.
23
There are some work procedures or some supervision guide lines that I used
while I was performing my work tasks. Unfortunately I started my internship just before
they started casting concrete for the grade beam, so I was not able to observe
construction of substructure construction like foundations. Here are some procedures I
used to perform my work tasks:-
(a) Form work
Form work is constructed in such a way that it can be removed from the
hardened Concrete easily without harming the concrete. The form work must be strong
enough to carry the load until the concrete is strong enough to carry itself and
hardened. Before casting of concrete starts, the form work must be the right dimension
and also it must be level and straight. And also before casting of concrete starts, the
inside of the form work should be thoroughly cleaned and free from dirt and organic
matters like wood, roots, bushes and shrubs. All form work should be removed without
any damage to the concrete. After removal of the form work, remedial treatment (curing)
to the surface of the hardened concrete should be carried out immediately without
delay.
(b) Hard core construction
What I have seen at site when constructing hardcore is that we first have to
check the ground conditions under the soil. So, we perform a test by digging a small pit
24
of diameter about 40 – 50 cm and depth of about 60 – 70 cm. Then after we checked if
the soil has any water content which could harm the hard core in the future. If the water
content is acceptable, then the hard core construction can begin.
For construction we first had to compact the soil under the hard core. Then we
have to place selected material and then after we have to compact it using a small
roller. After that we placed the hard core in such a way that it can be bind together when
the lean concrete is added. Then we can cast the lean concrete on top of the hard core
leaving about 6 cm under the grade beam level so that a ‘mesh’ of Ø6 reinforcement
bars can be placed and after that we can pour the final concrete up to the grade beam
level.
(c) Columnreinforcement
The column reinforcement length is the summation of the story height of a
building, the depth of the top beam and the overlap length or the summation of floor to
floor elevation difference and the overlap length. Commonly on site this overlap length
is taken four times diameter of the bar.
Before concrete casting on columns begins, there are preconditions that should
have to be checked. These are:-
 Check the formwork.
 Diameter, length and number of reinforcement bars in accordance with the
structural plan.
 Arrangement of stirrups.
 Placement of spacers.
(d) Slab
Slab is one of the major components of a high rise building. When using concrete
to construct slab as it is usually the case in our country, it is either a solid slab or a
ribbed slab.
When we come to my case where the building project I was assigned to is a four
storey high condominium building. The slab is ribbed held up by precast beam s. A
‘mesh’ of Ø6 reinforcement bars is laid on top of the slab blocks and after that the main
component which is the concrete is poured on top of the slab blocks and the
Ø6reinforcement bars.
25
The casting of the concrete is probably the most challenging part of constructing
a high rise building. You have to coordinate every crew member from one that has a few
to play to the one that has a high role to play.
When casting the concrete for slab it a considerable amount of human labor.
When casting the concrete for the slab an electrician and a plumber must be present on
site at all times to maintain damaged conduits and PVC pipes respectively.
Note that the number of crew members to cast the concrete slab keeps
increasing as the floor level increases. This is because of height increases. When the
height increases the distance the crew members travel also increases. So, as a result
the time it takes to cast the concrete is longer and in order to finish casting the concrete
in one day the number of laborers has to be increased.
26
How good I have been in performing my work tasks
I can really say that I am in a good position in performing the given tasks I was
given responsibility to perform. This is due to the help of courses that I took in the
previous semesters. I have gained much theoretical knowledge that helps me to
execute the tasks given to me. If someone who was not given the proper theoretical
knowledge was given the same task, it would be difficult to execute the work. This is
due to the fact that all the practical activity depend s on the theoretical knowledge. For
instance the activities on site like site clearance, soil exploration, excavation, foundation
construction, column beam and slab construction, masonry works, plastering works, etc.
are briefly explained in previously taken courses like:
 Specification and quantity
 Foundation
 Reinforced concrete design
 Building construction I and II
 Construction material I and II etc.
The knowledge of these courses helps us students to implement the above
activities onsite easily. From the comment given from my supervisor, I would say I have
enough knowledge to execute and supervise a building project. The other important
thing that everyone should not forget in performing an activity is that having good
communication skill. This skill is very important because it can affect the project
progress. The one who has good communication skill can complete the activity in a
short duration than a person who has less communication skill ability. The
communication skill can include good commanding ability, fast conflict resolution, etc.
So in real activity I have gained enough knowledge of the above skill. Therefore I have
performed my activity in the easiest and fastest way. If someone fails to perform his
tasks properly, he/she can affect the project schedule and results in the delay of the
project. The delay of the project affects not only the company but also the country’s
economy as a whole. So a careful attention should be taken while performing any task
in a project. For instance if someone does not check the correct placement of
reinforcement bar of the beam or the slab before signing inspection paper the failure of
this structural element leads to the failure of the whole project unless the correct
measure is taken as soon as possible.
Challenges I have been facing during performing my work tasks
27
 At the beginning of the internship, there was lack of gaining responsibility by my
supervisor. This was because I had no experience in work place or the site.
 Transport problems:-it was a little hard for me to arrive at the company's work
time. This affects my punctuality.
 Lack of office materials and office equipments like computer, calculator, pen and
paper etc.... Because of scarcity of these materials, I couldn’t execute office
works like quantity surveying, payment preparation and data collecting easily.
 Lack of construction safety wears i.e. safety shoes, helmet, glove etc…. Because
of this I couldn’t reach in risky areas of the site.
Measures I have taken to overcome these challenges
 To be entrusted with a responsibility raises the questions of how things are to be
executed and to be patient until I get used to the construction site. After that I
started understanding both structural and architectural designs of the building
project and my supervisor started giving me tasks which would help me in the
future with the experience I get.
 For transport related problems, I tried arriving to the work site as early as
possible.
 Shortage of office space and office materials was the main challenges to work. I
tried to use my own materials and equipments like calculator, paper and pen
etc….
 For problems related to construction safety wears I take many measures like
wearing my own hard shoes not entering to risky areas of the site and walking
carefully so that I don’t step on nails and other harmful materials.
Overall benefits I gained from the internship
28
During my stay at the construction site I have gained many benefits and I had
upgraded my knowledge and experienced things about the real construction sector that
I couldn’t get from anywhere else.
What I gained in terms of improving my practical skills
Actually we took many theoretical courses before we enter to the internship
program. Almost all days of my internship program was passed on the site. So, I got
many practical skills. Among the practical skill I got:-
 Grade beam construction
 Column construction- first they put the bars for the columns according to
the design, then they put spacer, construct formwork, check constructed
column by plum bob and ‘legna’. If the checked column have problem the
carpenter correct it and finally the column casted.
 Slab construction-in this construction we have two support these are :-
 Crest – used to support the main beam and made from timber.
 Probes - used to support the precast beam and ribbed slab and are
made from timber
The procedure to construct slab are:-
 Put the bars for main beam
 Connect the precast beam with main beam by use of bars.
29
 Putting ribbed slab between the edges of two precast beam.
 Electrical line installation(conduits)
 The supervisor checked bars diameter, negative bar location, centre to
canter dimension of main beam and bar for stair. If there is a problem the
supervisor orders the labourers to correct it.
 Finally cast of slab done- in this we observe how to vibrate on the main
beam.
 Hard core filling- before the hard core filled we have to check the moisture
content of the soil.
 Lean concrete work –after we filled the hard core we cast lean concrete
 Mesh work- used to protect temperature and shrinkage
 Site term- in site the most difficult thing is to communicate with the labourers
because they traditional terms I don’t know.
Terms that are used in the site:-
 Tumby- a plumbob used to check verticality of column, wall etc...
 Legna- a rope used to check column alignment
 Kerabat- is a timber used to support formwork
 Phondo- is the lower part of the main beam
Generally I got many practical knowledge and experience which will help me in the
future.
What you gained in terms of upgrading your theoretical
knowledge
Many of the work progress in the construction site is a new thing for me and by the help
of my supervisor i combined the work with what I learned in school theoretically. In the
internship program i practically saw what I learnt in the university courses and even the
some courses i didn’t taken yet like scheduling and so on.
At this time I think I can lead small projects with the knowledge I have got theoretically
and in the internship program. On the other hand I will not be confused (challenged) as
I was taking only theoretical courses.
30
What I gained in terms of improving my interpersonal
communication skills
Construction work consists of a team of professionals, semi professionals, and
daily laborers. As a construction team member one should have or develop the ability to
communicate with everyone who is working on the construction site.
I have got so many benefits from good communication skills. I try to
communicate honestly, and tend to assume that what I communicate is what I mean to
communicate. However, previously, it was difficult for me to engage in conversation with
people and sometimes I miss understand what other people say. But when I start the
internship program, I got experience on how to communicate with people and this
internship program has given me effective communication skills that greatly improve my
communication and my relationship with other people.
The other important thing I gained from this good communication skills I
developed is that I gained self confidence and I started believing in myself and also
trusting other people around me. For effective communication to occur between two
parties there must be a general level of trust between them. Generally having a good
interpersonal communication is very important at any construction site because without
it no real progress can be achieved.
What I gained in terms of improving my team playing
skills
Construction is the task of each member of the team. Every member is expected
to fulfill his/her responsibility for the construction project to be a success. As an Intern
and member of the team I was responsible for tasks which were given to me from the
site engineer who is also my supervisor. Since an individual team member can do
nothing by himself, I had to cooperate with other team members, So that I could develop
the habit of working with each member of the team cooperatively.
From this team playing skill, some of the benefits I got were:-
31
 encourage open communication
 building credibility
 set specific goals
 measure progress
 collaboration with team members a must
 delegate responsibility to the team
What I gained in terms of improving my leadership skills
Leadership is a critical management skill. It is the ability to motivate a group of
people toward a common goal. This internship has developed my ability of getting and
giving information for good leadership skills. If I cannot communicate effectively, then no
other leadership skills will compensate for this lack. First and for most I must be able to
exchange information effectively and accurate for good leadership to occur.
The important thing is that a leader should understand the need and
characteristics of the group. When I came to this site I was be put in to a group where I
didn’t know anyone. Sound a little bit scary. There is a reason for it. Every one carries
with them a little bit of history. Everyone has the same advantage and opportunity to be
the best person they can be. There is no precondition or limitation on what I can
accomplish. So, I was able to learn about everyone else’s need, their character, what
make them angry, I learn what excites people, what motivates them, what they need to
succeed and how to support and grow the group. I learn about how a group comes
together and commit to achieve their goal.
Finally, what I also got from leadership is knowing and understanding group
resources, controlling the group, counseling, setting examples, planning, evaluation and
sharing leadership. Specially controlling is the most often an overt behavior of
leadership. There is also specific action that I take to exert influence over the team. Me
in a team will display the people in my patrol in a manner to promote a control, breaking
up destructive behaviors, to encourage greater participation.
32
What I gained in terms of understanding about work ethics
related issues
There are a lot of work ethics in construction site. My supervisor even told me I
must respect the work ethics while working on site. Among them:-
 Punctuality- in construction industry time is very valuable. If you enter late
for work you are cheating on valuable resources. So the construction
industry doesn’t attract such kind of person and you will not attract a
construction company because their profit is related to time. To achieve
your goal you must be punctual on work time.
 Develop team work skill-in construction site every work is done by team so
you have to be cooperative with laborers and every worker in the site
because when problem happen you will solve by discussing together with
everyone on the site. The reason for this is from working experience in
many building someone might bring a good solution.
 Cooperation with colleagues-in construction industry helping each other is
very essential because to the success of a construction company every
worker should work cooperatively unless by the failure of one person the
whole company will be criticize.
 Recognition to the best performing worker-this include encouraging the
person even by idea and level rising.
 Being sociable-in site there are a lot of ceremony beside the work starting
from drinking coffee. As a member of the site you have to participate in

What I gained in terms of entrepreneurship skills
This entrepreneurship has tended to start ventures that on a specific skill have
already developed and knowledge that I already acquired in certain occupation industry.
That is in my education career i am thinking of starting businesses. I will have a broad
array of entrepreneurial skills in order to succeed in today’s competitive market’s must
possess basic skills necessary to enable me to start, develop, finance and market my
own business enterprise. There are number of qualities and skills I need to have,
including personal attributes, business skills and management capability, while I may
not have all of them right now but there are some skills that I was able to develop while I
33
was at intern. These are self motivations skills, time management skills and
administrative skills.
A) Self motivation skills: to succeed in my work, I must be self starter with
cleared desired goals in my mind. I must have confidence in myself and in my idea.
More importantly I must be willing to focus my energy and work hard toward work
success. Everything may rest on my shoulder, from thinking up to planning, so I must be
smart enough to know when I need to go head and when to stop. Therefore I must have
that extra drive and commitment to make sure that I am taking the necessary steps to
make my dreams of successful work reality.
B) Time management skills: my ability to plan my day and manage time is
particularly important for my job. When I wake up in the morning, I must have a clear
idea of thinking that I must do this for the day, specially if I am running one person
operation, I must have the ability to perform multi task works. There are simply too
many things to do, as if work never stops. Part of having good time management skills
is to know when to stop and when to leave work. Also I need to know how to keep my
home life separate from my work life and ensure that there exists a balance between
the two.
C) Administration skills: starting a business is never easy, even if I have a
perfect background and posses all skill. Having the needed skills and qualities will not
even ensure my success. But having this basic skill of entrepreneurship will at least
lesson the point of the startup process. It gives me great chance of seeing my work
grow and prosper.
And last but not least, the most important thing that I benefited from this
entrepreneurship skill is the change in my personal and career attitudes. These
includes, self worth, ability to control one’s life, self awareness, self
management/personality responsibility, transfer of learning, motivation, team work,
interpersonal communication, problem solving and creativity are some of the important
attribute that I get in myself.
34
Conclusion and recommendations
Finally, I have been working in HAJA FEJ construction and Engineers plc. for about four
full months on one of the construction sites located at lideta as a practicing undergraduate
construction technology and management Student (Intern). During my stay on the site I have got
the chance to look, learn and engage in almost all of my future’s profession practical things as far
as my knowledge permits.
Since one of the main aims of the internship program is to make the interns adapt with the
external work environment, I could grasp lots of practical experiences from the company I was
working in.
Generally the internship Period was interesting and beneficial. For the entire program to be
a success I would like to thank all the company staff members and especially Engineer Farid
Abdulsemed and for welcoming to work on their internship.
My recommendation to the construction company is that to hire more staff members and
to increase their rank in this competitive construction business to help themselves, create jobs
and help other people and in the long run to help our country.

Intern report

  • 1. 1 Declaration of student and approval by mentor and supervisor My name is Fahdi Abbas. I am a fourth year construction technology and management student. I am currently working in the internship program in a construction company called HAJA FEJ construction and engineering. The project I am working on is a four storey high condominium building. The company has won a bid to construct two buildings side by side.  I declare that this report is my own property and it is not copied from anywhere else. Mentor Name - Signature -
  • 2. 2 Acknowledgement  First and for most I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the university industry linkage (uil) for organizing such a program for us students. The program helps us see what the construction sector really looks like and helps us get experience which is very vital in our profession.  CEO of HAJA FEJ construction and engineering Ato Abdulsemed Mohammed who accepted my desire to work my internship program in his company.  Project Manager of the company Ato Farid Abdulsemed who guided me through my internship program and who gave me different tasks to perform which helps me increases my knowledge.  My mentor Ato Abebe who helped us with our report writing skill and who gave us constructive criticism on how to make our internship period better.  And last but not least, I would like to thank all the workers on site especially the foreman Ato Birahnu who helped me made my internship program a success.
  • 3. 3 Executive summary Everybody knows education is the most important thing. But, I believe experience is equally important. I don’t know about other professions but when it comes to the construction sector experience is very important. It helps us compare what we have learned theoretically in class and what is really out there in the real world. The internship program helps us students grasp knowledge we cannot get from anywhere, even from class. We might learn about a certain topic in class and think we know everything there is to know about the subject. But In reality, unless we get experience, we can’t be certain we have enough knowledge to know about the subject. Even most experienced professionals don’t know everything about a certain construction subject. They may know the knowhow but, since conditions change from one construction site to another they don’t know everything. So we future construction managers are obligated to keep searching for knowledge and experience even after we graduate. When we start class in the next semester, I don’t think it will be the same as before. We now know something about the construction industry so, I have no doubt it will help us when we start class by making it easier. The project I was working on during my internship program was a two block four storey high condominium building. The construction company is called HAJA FEJ construction and engineering. I was working on the contractor side.

  • 16. 16 the project engineers at the company and the company accepted my request with open arms. I didn’t have to look for other construction companies because I knew the company had on-going projects which were exiting and also challenging. The project engineer Farid Abdulsemed showed and told me about everything that is found on site. He guided me well during the whole period of internship at the construction site. Which section of the company I have been working in In a construction company there are mainly three sections or organs involved in the construction system. These sections are the client, the consulting office and the contractors. All these three sections have their own tasks and activity that are expected from them to perform. As for my case, I have been working on the contractor’s side. In the construction sector experience is the most important thing and I recommend students to work on the contractor’s side if they want to get many experiences. The construction company has won a bid to construct two blocks of condominium buildings side by side. The contract is given to the construction company by Lideta sub. City housing development office and the consultants are PACE consultant Architects and Engineers Plc. The buildings are four storey high buildings each. The cost of the building is estimated to be 4.5 million birr for each block. I had been working on the construction site throughout my entire internship period and I have to admit it was a little hard working on site. But then again construction is hard and so I had to get used to it which I did. Work flow

  • 19. 19 are some of them. These activities are mostly controlled by the site engineer. I am always closely working with the site engineer and the foreman. They give me a chance to control and check this work tasks. If I feel that some mistakes are made, I have to tell the worker who is responsible for the mistake to take the correct measures otherwise I had to immediately report to the foreman or the site engineer. The reinforcement bar checks that are mostly to be checked include the number of bars of main structures and alignment of the structures. These main structures include columns, slabs, beams and stair case. A column is a slender, vertical membrane that carries super imposed loads. Concrete columns especially those subjected a bending stress must always reinforced with a steel. In concrete column a vertical reinforcement is a principal reinforcement. However a loaded column shorted vertical and expands laterally. Hence, lateral reinforcement in the form of lateral tie is used to restrain the expansion. Columns reinforced in this manner are called tied column. Beams are principal load carrying horizontal member. They take the load directly from the floor slabs and carry it into the columns .Concrete beams can either be cast in situ or precast beams that are transported to the job site. Their reinforcement bars are either straight or bent up. Principal reinforcing bars are needed to resist the bending tension in the bottom over the central portion of the span. Fewer bars are necessary at
  • 20. 20 the bottom, near the end of the span, where the bending moment is small. For this reason some bars may be bent so that the inclined portion can be used to resist diagonal tensions. The reinforcement bars of continuous beams are continued across the support to resist tensions in the top in that area. Staircase construction also needs reinforcement bars but this reinforcement bars are more complex compared to that of column and beams. The quality of concrete is also another thing that I have to control. This quality is basically affected by the mix ratio of the concrete. Since the proper mix ratio will give us strong and durable concrete mix. To make a concrete there are four basic materials you need. This are, cement (OPC and PPC), aggregate (gravel), sand and water. The ratio of aggregate to sand to cement is important factor in determining the compressive strength of concrete mixture. A concrete mix ratio of 1 part of cement, 2 part of sand, and three part of aggregate will produce a concrete mix of approximately 25mpa or c- 25 concrete. Mixing of water with cement, sand, and aggregate will produce or form a paste that will bind the material together until the mix hardens. The strength property of a concrete is inversely proportional to water to cement ratio.
  • 21. 21 Basically this means the more water you use to mix the concrete (very fluid) the weaker the concrete mix and the less water you use to mix the concrete (somewhat dry but workable) is the stronger the concrete mix. Quantity takeoff sheet is another thing I do with my supervisors. When the estimated work sheet is completed, it shows the various individual activities for the project with the listing of the required material and material schedule for several activities. The work sheet should also contain an activity description, an item number, the material description, the cost, the unit of issues, the waste factors, the total quantity and the remarks. Finally I also got the chance to perform different kind of tests. These tastes are mostly the silt or the jar test and the slump test. The jar test is very important to determine the amount of silt content in sand. The slump test is perhaps the most widely used method for checking the consistency of concrete. Used at the construction site, it provides useful information on
  • 22. 22 the uniformity in the day to day or even hour to hour production of concrete. According to Ethiopian standard the slump cone should be 305mm high, 203 and 102mm diameter at the bottom and top respectively. After being moistened it is placed on a smooth surface with ambler opening at the top, and filled with the concrete sample in three layers. Each layer is tamped 25 times with standard straight tamping rod 16mm in diameter and 60cm in length while the mould is held firmly against its base. Immediately after filling the cone is gently lifted leaving the unsupported concrete to slump. The consistency is measured in terms of the amount it has slumped in centimeter. Three types of result could be obtained: I. The sample could slump evenly all around in which case it is said to be a true slump. II. Part of the top cones might shear off and slide down and inclined plane giving a shear slump III. The cone could completely collapse. The first type of slump indicates a well proportioned concrete where as the second, or the shear slump, occurs usually with harsh mix with lack of cohesion. Mixes of stiff consistence have a zero slump. Procedures I used while performing my work tasks Working hours of the site is from 8 A.M to 5 P.M with lunch break. As a team member I was always working with the staff attentively. Every day before every member of the team rushes to his own work, the site engineer gave me some sort of task to do within a specified time and report to him if I face any difficulty when performing such tasks. It is true that “the best manager is the one who is planning better”. So that in order to handle the work tasks I was given properly, I was always planning the work schedule. I always discussed what approach to use to handle the work tasks I was given with the site engineer who is also my supervisor.
  • 23. 23 There are some work procedures or some supervision guide lines that I used while I was performing my work tasks. Unfortunately I started my internship just before they started casting concrete for the grade beam, so I was not able to observe construction of substructure construction like foundations. Here are some procedures I used to perform my work tasks:- (a) Form work Form work is constructed in such a way that it can be removed from the hardened Concrete easily without harming the concrete. The form work must be strong enough to carry the load until the concrete is strong enough to carry itself and hardened. Before casting of concrete starts, the form work must be the right dimension and also it must be level and straight. And also before casting of concrete starts, the inside of the form work should be thoroughly cleaned and free from dirt and organic matters like wood, roots, bushes and shrubs. All form work should be removed without any damage to the concrete. After removal of the form work, remedial treatment (curing) to the surface of the hardened concrete should be carried out immediately without delay. (b) Hard core construction What I have seen at site when constructing hardcore is that we first have to check the ground conditions under the soil. So, we perform a test by digging a small pit
  • 24. 24 of diameter about 40 – 50 cm and depth of about 60 – 70 cm. Then after we checked if the soil has any water content which could harm the hard core in the future. If the water content is acceptable, then the hard core construction can begin. For construction we first had to compact the soil under the hard core. Then we have to place selected material and then after we have to compact it using a small roller. After that we placed the hard core in such a way that it can be bind together when the lean concrete is added. Then we can cast the lean concrete on top of the hard core leaving about 6 cm under the grade beam level so that a ‘mesh’ of Ø6 reinforcement bars can be placed and after that we can pour the final concrete up to the grade beam level. (c) Columnreinforcement The column reinforcement length is the summation of the story height of a building, the depth of the top beam and the overlap length or the summation of floor to floor elevation difference and the overlap length. Commonly on site this overlap length is taken four times diameter of the bar. Before concrete casting on columns begins, there are preconditions that should have to be checked. These are:-  Check the formwork.  Diameter, length and number of reinforcement bars in accordance with the structural plan.  Arrangement of stirrups.  Placement of spacers. (d) Slab Slab is one of the major components of a high rise building. When using concrete to construct slab as it is usually the case in our country, it is either a solid slab or a ribbed slab. When we come to my case where the building project I was assigned to is a four storey high condominium building. The slab is ribbed held up by precast beam s. A ‘mesh’ of Ø6 reinforcement bars is laid on top of the slab blocks and after that the main component which is the concrete is poured on top of the slab blocks and the Ø6reinforcement bars.
  • 25. 25 The casting of the concrete is probably the most challenging part of constructing a high rise building. You have to coordinate every crew member from one that has a few to play to the one that has a high role to play. When casting the concrete for slab it a considerable amount of human labor. When casting the concrete for the slab an electrician and a plumber must be present on site at all times to maintain damaged conduits and PVC pipes respectively. Note that the number of crew members to cast the concrete slab keeps increasing as the floor level increases. This is because of height increases. When the height increases the distance the crew members travel also increases. So, as a result the time it takes to cast the concrete is longer and in order to finish casting the concrete in one day the number of laborers has to be increased.
  • 26. 26 How good I have been in performing my work tasks I can really say that I am in a good position in performing the given tasks I was given responsibility to perform. This is due to the help of courses that I took in the previous semesters. I have gained much theoretical knowledge that helps me to execute the tasks given to me. If someone who was not given the proper theoretical knowledge was given the same task, it would be difficult to execute the work. This is due to the fact that all the practical activity depend s on the theoretical knowledge. For instance the activities on site like site clearance, soil exploration, excavation, foundation construction, column beam and slab construction, masonry works, plastering works, etc. are briefly explained in previously taken courses like:  Specification and quantity  Foundation  Reinforced concrete design  Building construction I and II  Construction material I and II etc. The knowledge of these courses helps us students to implement the above activities onsite easily. From the comment given from my supervisor, I would say I have enough knowledge to execute and supervise a building project. The other important thing that everyone should not forget in performing an activity is that having good communication skill. This skill is very important because it can affect the project progress. The one who has good communication skill can complete the activity in a short duration than a person who has less communication skill ability. The communication skill can include good commanding ability, fast conflict resolution, etc. So in real activity I have gained enough knowledge of the above skill. Therefore I have performed my activity in the easiest and fastest way. If someone fails to perform his tasks properly, he/she can affect the project schedule and results in the delay of the project. The delay of the project affects not only the company but also the country’s economy as a whole. So a careful attention should be taken while performing any task in a project. For instance if someone does not check the correct placement of reinforcement bar of the beam or the slab before signing inspection paper the failure of this structural element leads to the failure of the whole project unless the correct measure is taken as soon as possible. Challenges I have been facing during performing my work tasks
  • 27. 27  At the beginning of the internship, there was lack of gaining responsibility by my supervisor. This was because I had no experience in work place or the site.  Transport problems:-it was a little hard for me to arrive at the company's work time. This affects my punctuality.  Lack of office materials and office equipments like computer, calculator, pen and paper etc.... Because of scarcity of these materials, I couldn’t execute office works like quantity surveying, payment preparation and data collecting easily.  Lack of construction safety wears i.e. safety shoes, helmet, glove etc…. Because of this I couldn’t reach in risky areas of the site. Measures I have taken to overcome these challenges  To be entrusted with a responsibility raises the questions of how things are to be executed and to be patient until I get used to the construction site. After that I started understanding both structural and architectural designs of the building project and my supervisor started giving me tasks which would help me in the future with the experience I get.  For transport related problems, I tried arriving to the work site as early as possible.  Shortage of office space and office materials was the main challenges to work. I tried to use my own materials and equipments like calculator, paper and pen etc….  For problems related to construction safety wears I take many measures like wearing my own hard shoes not entering to risky areas of the site and walking carefully so that I don’t step on nails and other harmful materials. Overall benefits I gained from the internship
  • 28. 28 During my stay at the construction site I have gained many benefits and I had upgraded my knowledge and experienced things about the real construction sector that I couldn’t get from anywhere else. What I gained in terms of improving my practical skills Actually we took many theoretical courses before we enter to the internship program. Almost all days of my internship program was passed on the site. So, I got many practical skills. Among the practical skill I got:-  Grade beam construction  Column construction- first they put the bars for the columns according to the design, then they put spacer, construct formwork, check constructed column by plum bob and ‘legna’. If the checked column have problem the carpenter correct it and finally the column casted.  Slab construction-in this construction we have two support these are :-  Crest – used to support the main beam and made from timber.  Probes - used to support the precast beam and ribbed slab and are made from timber The procedure to construct slab are:-  Put the bars for main beam  Connect the precast beam with main beam by use of bars.
  • 29. 29  Putting ribbed slab between the edges of two precast beam.  Electrical line installation(conduits)  The supervisor checked bars diameter, negative bar location, centre to canter dimension of main beam and bar for stair. If there is a problem the supervisor orders the labourers to correct it.  Finally cast of slab done- in this we observe how to vibrate on the main beam.  Hard core filling- before the hard core filled we have to check the moisture content of the soil.  Lean concrete work –after we filled the hard core we cast lean concrete  Mesh work- used to protect temperature and shrinkage  Site term- in site the most difficult thing is to communicate with the labourers because they traditional terms I don’t know. Terms that are used in the site:-  Tumby- a plumbob used to check verticality of column, wall etc...  Legna- a rope used to check column alignment  Kerabat- is a timber used to support formwork  Phondo- is the lower part of the main beam Generally I got many practical knowledge and experience which will help me in the future. What you gained in terms of upgrading your theoretical knowledge Many of the work progress in the construction site is a new thing for me and by the help of my supervisor i combined the work with what I learned in school theoretically. In the internship program i practically saw what I learnt in the university courses and even the some courses i didn’t taken yet like scheduling and so on. At this time I think I can lead small projects with the knowledge I have got theoretically and in the internship program. On the other hand I will not be confused (challenged) as I was taking only theoretical courses.
  • 30. 30 What I gained in terms of improving my interpersonal communication skills Construction work consists of a team of professionals, semi professionals, and daily laborers. As a construction team member one should have or develop the ability to communicate with everyone who is working on the construction site. I have got so many benefits from good communication skills. I try to communicate honestly, and tend to assume that what I communicate is what I mean to communicate. However, previously, it was difficult for me to engage in conversation with people and sometimes I miss understand what other people say. But when I start the internship program, I got experience on how to communicate with people and this internship program has given me effective communication skills that greatly improve my communication and my relationship with other people. The other important thing I gained from this good communication skills I developed is that I gained self confidence and I started believing in myself and also trusting other people around me. For effective communication to occur between two parties there must be a general level of trust between them. Generally having a good interpersonal communication is very important at any construction site because without it no real progress can be achieved. What I gained in terms of improving my team playing skills Construction is the task of each member of the team. Every member is expected to fulfill his/her responsibility for the construction project to be a success. As an Intern and member of the team I was responsible for tasks which were given to me from the site engineer who is also my supervisor. Since an individual team member can do nothing by himself, I had to cooperate with other team members, So that I could develop the habit of working with each member of the team cooperatively. From this team playing skill, some of the benefits I got were:-
  • 31. 31  encourage open communication  building credibility  set specific goals  measure progress  collaboration with team members a must  delegate responsibility to the team What I gained in terms of improving my leadership skills Leadership is a critical management skill. It is the ability to motivate a group of people toward a common goal. This internship has developed my ability of getting and giving information for good leadership skills. If I cannot communicate effectively, then no other leadership skills will compensate for this lack. First and for most I must be able to exchange information effectively and accurate for good leadership to occur. The important thing is that a leader should understand the need and characteristics of the group. When I came to this site I was be put in to a group where I didn’t know anyone. Sound a little bit scary. There is a reason for it. Every one carries with them a little bit of history. Everyone has the same advantage and opportunity to be the best person they can be. There is no precondition or limitation on what I can accomplish. So, I was able to learn about everyone else’s need, their character, what make them angry, I learn what excites people, what motivates them, what they need to succeed and how to support and grow the group. I learn about how a group comes together and commit to achieve their goal. Finally, what I also got from leadership is knowing and understanding group resources, controlling the group, counseling, setting examples, planning, evaluation and sharing leadership. Specially controlling is the most often an overt behavior of leadership. There is also specific action that I take to exert influence over the team. Me in a team will display the people in my patrol in a manner to promote a control, breaking up destructive behaviors, to encourage greater participation.
  • 32. 32 What I gained in terms of understanding about work ethics related issues There are a lot of work ethics in construction site. My supervisor even told me I must respect the work ethics while working on site. Among them:-  Punctuality- in construction industry time is very valuable. If you enter late for work you are cheating on valuable resources. So the construction industry doesn’t attract such kind of person and you will not attract a construction company because their profit is related to time. To achieve your goal you must be punctual on work time.  Develop team work skill-in construction site every work is done by team so you have to be cooperative with laborers and every worker in the site because when problem happen you will solve by discussing together with everyone on the site. The reason for this is from working experience in many building someone might bring a good solution.  Cooperation with colleagues-in construction industry helping each other is very essential because to the success of a construction company every worker should work cooperatively unless by the failure of one person the whole company will be criticize.  Recognition to the best performing worker-this include encouraging the person even by idea and level rising.  Being sociable-in site there are a lot of ceremony beside the work starting from drinking coffee. As a member of the site you have to participate in such ceremony. What I gained in terms of entrepreneurship skills This entrepreneurship has tended to start ventures that on a specific skill have already developed and knowledge that I already acquired in certain occupation industry. That is in my education career i am thinking of starting businesses. I will have a broad array of entrepreneurial skills in order to succeed in today’s competitive market’s must possess basic skills necessary to enable me to start, develop, finance and market my own business enterprise. There are number of qualities and skills I need to have, including personal attributes, business skills and management capability, while I may not have all of them right now but there are some skills that I was able to develop while I
  • 33. 33 was at intern. These are self motivations skills, time management skills and administrative skills. A) Self motivation skills: to succeed in my work, I must be self starter with cleared desired goals in my mind. I must have confidence in myself and in my idea. More importantly I must be willing to focus my energy and work hard toward work success. Everything may rest on my shoulder, from thinking up to planning, so I must be smart enough to know when I need to go head and when to stop. Therefore I must have that extra drive and commitment to make sure that I am taking the necessary steps to make my dreams of successful work reality. B) Time management skills: my ability to plan my day and manage time is particularly important for my job. When I wake up in the morning, I must have a clear idea of thinking that I must do this for the day, specially if I am running one person operation, I must have the ability to perform multi task works. There are simply too many things to do, as if work never stops. Part of having good time management skills is to know when to stop and when to leave work. Also I need to know how to keep my home life separate from my work life and ensure that there exists a balance between the two. C) Administration skills: starting a business is never easy, even if I have a perfect background and posses all skill. Having the needed skills and qualities will not even ensure my success. But having this basic skill of entrepreneurship will at least lesson the point of the startup process. It gives me great chance of seeing my work grow and prosper. And last but not least, the most important thing that I benefited from this entrepreneurship skill is the change in my personal and career attitudes. These includes, self worth, ability to control one’s life, self awareness, self management/personality responsibility, transfer of learning, motivation, team work, interpersonal communication, problem solving and creativity are some of the important attribute that I get in myself.
  • 34. 34 Conclusion and recommendations Finally, I have been working in HAJA FEJ construction and Engineers plc. for about four full months on one of the construction sites located at lideta as a practicing undergraduate construction technology and management Student (Intern). During my stay on the site I have got the chance to look, learn and engage in almost all of my future’s profession practical things as far as my knowledge permits. Since one of the main aims of the internship program is to make the interns adapt with the external work environment, I could grasp lots of practical experiences from the company I was working in. Generally the internship Period was interesting and beneficial. For the entire program to be a success I would like to thank all the company staff members and especially Engineer Farid Abdulsemed and for welcoming to work on their internship. My recommendation to the construction company is that to hire more staff members and to increase their rank in this competitive construction business to help themselves, create jobs and help other people and in the long run to help our country.
