INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE IMPLIMENTATION OF EEP IN THE
SELECTED SCHOOLS
The English Enrichment Program (EEP) focuses on building a strong foundation in the
learners of English language at Primary level. This package incorporates language elements all the
components of the English language, enabling the child to become a successful communicator,
better reader, creative writer. The programme (EEP) aims at improving English language
competence among the learners of class V and VI in the Government Schools of Kerala under the
General Education Department. In the beginning this programme is implemented as a Pilot
Programme selecting one school each from all the educational sub-districts (163). English
Enrichment programme (EEP) is designed to be implemented with interrelated processes and
procedures. This teaching approach is based on the process-oriented view of language teaching.
Each and every activity in the class room as part of EEP must be coordinated with each other.
Resource teacher and the practising teacher may develop appropriate teacher talk in tune with
existing directions of the department of general education. In this way EEP can enrich the
language acquisition of learners.
Major objectives of the programme.
1) To empower the leaners in English language communication.
2) To enhance the confidence level of learners in using English language.
3) To provide exposure rich environment for better English language acquisition.
General norms to be followed for the successful implementation of EEP
❖ This programme (EEP) aims at improving English language competence among the
learners of class V and VI in the Government Schools of Kerala under the General
Education Department.
❖ EEP will be implemented in selected 163 schools i.e., one school from each educational
sub-district (163).
❖ The programme is to be implemented in this academic year 2022-23 starting from January
and extending up to March 3 week.

❖ Tentative schedule for EEP programme extending up to March has been appended in
annexure 3
❖ District level seminar for sharing experiences/try out is scheduled to be held on 18th
March
2023.
❖ School level programme has to be organised at convenient date prior to 18th
March 2023.
If all activities are not complete by then, selected items/activities may be staged on the day
of school level activities.
❖ Major highlights of the EEP programme can be showcased for the annual school day.
❖ Follow-up of the programme will be done after assessing the Pilot Programme in its
entirety.
❖ This Programme is implemented as a 100-hour course, as an additional programme along
with the existing curriculum in English. 50 Hours for class 5- and 50 hours for class 6.
When the programme arranged, on Saturdays as joint workshop, the entire programme
the total working hours will be 83 hours.
❖ As the first stage a maximum of 50 students each from class V and VI (2 batches) will be
identified. It should be ensured that all students in the same class is participated in the
programme wherever possible. Appropriate local adjustments may be done in consultation
with the district level committee.
❖ The programme aims at improving the English Language Competence of the vernacular
medium students of the selected schools.
❖ The programme sessions are arranged before or after the school hours for the duration of 1
hour. In addition, there will be a three-hour general session on all Saturdays (FN). The
classes may be clubbed together for the programme.
❖ The resource person for the programme will be identified at the district level by a team
constituted for the purpose.
❖ For the effective implementation of the programme the resource person, the regular teacher
and the Head of the institution should work collaboratively. They will be trained for this
by the department.
❖ The schools in each sub district will be identified by the principal of the DIETs of the
district concerned.

Other instructions and note to the RPs
➢ The programme will be conducted by DCEs in 14 districts following the direction of the
department of the general education. The department may issue necessary instruction time
to time as it may deem to be necessary for the successful implementation of the
programme. All available instructions are appended as annexure 2.
➢ Thematic continuity to the selected activities so that they will enhance the thinking process
and imagination of the learners. Therefore, school annual day and other important day
celebrations have been selected to ensure thematic continuity.
➢ Collaborative thinking, self-assessment etc. which are essential processes for constructing
knowledge. Hence, classroom processes are very significant in learning. Teacher has to
provide ample time for the students to think and work in group.
➢ The wholistic nature of language is to be considered while organizing class room activities.
➢ Input discourse as well as the output discourse need to be identified appropriately according
to the level of the students while conducting the activities
➢ Elements ensuring joyful learning and creative engagement should be given prominence
during the workshop and developing teacher talk.
➢ Practising teacher and the resource teacher shall work together in developing teacher talk
for each activity. While developing teacher talk, basic tenants of constructivist pedagogy
should be adopted.
➢ Practising teacher and resource teacher shall work collaboratively. He/She may mentor
the resource teacher during the entire programme.
➢ The expected discourse should maintain a growth from the beginning of the module to the
end.
➢ Slots for self- assessment of the learners as well as teacher assessment and continuous
feedback should be ensured. These activities should be arranged considering the practical
aspects and various levels of the learners.
➢ Language of communication shall be level specific.
➢ Ensure participation of every learner.
➢ Address the language barriers of the learners at their pace.
➢ Administer cooperative and collaborative learning strategies.
➢ While selecting the digital resources, videos and audios consider the copy right issues.

➢ Build good rapport with all.
➢ Create conducive learning atmosphere considering all learners
Monitoring and Assessment
Monitoring student progress allows the teacher to evaluate the effectiveness of their own
teaching. It will help the teacher to decide on the strategies, delivery method and assess the
language ability and understand the effectiveness of the programme implementation. To do this, it
is especially important for teachers to assess their own instructional strategies to see if they are
working. CCE, portfolio assessment and performance, participation in the school annul day will
provide tangible evidences of learner’s progress. State/District/Sub district level monitoring
committees shall visit the schools for monitoring and supporting.
Initial note for the commencement of EEP
School's annual day reflects its culture, talents, merits, collaboration spirit, and overall
participation. Obviously, it is a celebration of unity and dedication. In such a setting, every
student has a potential role, and his or her family is overwhelmed with delight and excitement.
To organise such a wonderful event, every class must participate enthusiastically. They are
required to have deliberate, focused planning. Important days falling in the month of January,
February and March may be organised as festive days in the school. Beautiful celebrations of
those days may be taken for annual day.
For example in the month of January we have republic day, friendship day, tourism day and
education day and in February, we have safer internet day , world radio day, National science
day and in March we have wild life day, storytelling day and women’s day. Ahead of annual
day in the month of March, different games and activities can also be arranged in each week
and the winner for the team may be awarded prize at the annual day. Important days falling in
the month of January, February and March may be considered as context/subthemes for
developing activities from the EEP module.

All activities of English enrichment program maybe organised in the school prior to the
annual day to be celebrated in the month of March. Activities may be organised as celebration
of English language abilities. Celebration of competencies, abilities and performance in English
might and encourage all the participants. Learner performances and evidences of learning, may
be compiled for the school annual day. Parents of the children may be invited for the programme
as special PTA meeting. Let children perform in front of everyone in the annual day in English
or at least one or two hours in English. Every child shall be given proper chances to take part
in the activity. Prior to the annual day, an exhibition may be arranged for the whole school and
public to come view the activities of EEP. Portfolio assessment and CCE may be employed and
annual day itself may be taken as assessment of the programme.
Important days falling in the month of January, February and March may be organised as
festive days in the school. Beautiful celebrations of those days may be taken for annual day.
Example the month of January we have republic day friendship day tourism day education day
and in February we have National Science Day and wildlife day. Ahead of annual day in the
month of March, different games and activities may be arranged in each week and the winner
for the team may be awarded price at the annual day. Important days falling in the month of
January, February and March may be considered as context for developing activities from the
module. All activities of English enrichment program maybe organised in the school prior to
the annual day to be celebrated in the month of March. Activities may be organised as
celebration of English language abilities. Celebration of competencies, abilities and
performance in English might and encourage all the participants. Special PTA meeting may be
convened. In front of everyone, annual school day in English or at least giving one or two hours
for EEP students may be performed.

“Dear children, we have annual day celebrations the most awaiting
occasion of our school in March 2nd
week. As you know it is our celebration.
How do we get up for that? we have to do lot of planning and we have two
months ahead. We need a lot of things to do and plan. Don't we want to
make it a beautiful, successful story? What do we do in January and

February and March? What can be done? We shall make all types of
arrangements. We have to develop notices, brochures and hold press meet
etc. Prior to annual day an exhibition to showcase the achievements of our
learners, acclaims of the school. Evidences of our EEP programme,
collections of portfolios, recorded events of classroom performances may
be organized as an audio-visual show. Narration of the local history in
English shall be prepared and presented on the day. You can prepare video
documentation on school and surroundings. You can upload the video on
YouTube. But make sure that you get the permission.
Let's make it colourful. We can decorate our school and
surroundings with paper crafts and other fancy items. We shall organise our
school annual day and you will do the compering. You may take the help of
your teachers and friends. We will arrange an exhibition arranging and
displaying evidences of learning in English class and EEP. You may include
charts posters etc.
Apart from stage performances, there will be some other interesting
activities like games puzzles, role plays and chart making etc. All individual
student items for performances which you all decide will be staged. So,
children let’s start our preparation. Are you ready? Best items might
