ICQ was an early instant messaging client first launched in 1996 by Mirabilis. It allowed users to be interconnected online when previously people were only connected to the Internet individually. ICQ grew to have over 31 million users before being acquired by AOL in 1998 for $407 million. It introduced many innovative features including offline messaging, multi-user chats, file transfers, games and a searchable user directory. Later versions added notes, reminders, skins support, free SMS messaging, and voice/video calling capabilities.
