2. Which cereal stays crunchiest in
milk the longest?
Frosted Flakes
Apple Jacks
Cocoa Krispies
Pops
Froot Loops
3. Research
Pops = “gun-puffed”
Froot Loops and Apple Jacks = “extruded gun-puffed”
Cocoa Krispies = “oven-puffed”
Frosted Flakes = starch from corn kernels are cooked
into flakes
4. Procedures:
Step One: I decided to use a “fun pack” that has five different mini
boxes of cereals in them to test my inquiry. The cereals are Froot
Loops, Frosted Flakes, Pops, Cocoa Krispies, and Apple Jacks.
Step Two: I put the whole mini box of each cereal into the same bowl
and added one cup of milk to each bowl. Then I waited and watched to
see which cereal became the soggiest the fastest and which stayed
crunchy the longest.
Step Three: I found that Frosted Flakes became soggy the fastest and
Pops stayed crunchy the longest. I tested my observation by feeling the
cereals and trying to crunch it between my fingers.
Results: In retrospect, learned that “gun-puffed” cereals stay crunchy in
milk longer then “oven-puffed” or cooked starch cereals. This could be
because they more closely resemble popcorn and the corn kernel that is
popped has a stronger resistance to milk breaking down its walls.
