“An Innovative Life: How to Capitalize on your Passions During and After College” presented by Emily Havens '09, Design + Strategy Consultant at Owl, Fox and Dean
Emily Havens, Colorado College ‘09, graduated with an Independently Designed Major in Environmental Anthropology. She has been enthusiastically “independently designing” her life since. Drawing on her cross-disciplinary experiences in the world of wilderness and leadership education, social finance, venture philanthropy, and the startup world of Silicon Valley, Havens will take us on a journey of possibility, insight, and self-reflection. Come ready to engage and reflect, and be armed with all the questions you can muster. Hosted by Re Evitt, associate dean of the college.
This is who I am
I believe there is more in us than we think.
I’m committed to living into
What does it mean to be a leader?
I hope to foster a deep connection between values and value to drive compassionate action. How can we create a world where our values drive the value share bring to our workplace, our communities, and our families?
Think joy!
As a studied environmental anthropologist and adaptive leader, she loves the question “what is possible?” and is forever driven by her deepest underlying belief that love will win.
Em is known for her ability to rise to all challenges with determination, contagious enthusiasm and playful brilliance.
We are leaders from every seat and I believe leadership, in an adaptive, honest, and authentic way, is something the world needs now more than ever.
I’m drawn to challenge, and when I show up, I try to always be present where I am and bring my whole self: with a fierce determination & a healthy dose of playfulness. and enthusiasm. Always enthusiasm. I’ve got a knack for seeing the big picture & am currently using my powers for good working with a wide variety of social enterprises & social entrepreneurs to drive real, systems level change.
When people tell you things, believe them.
Where do I feel the most alive?
Its ALL ABOUT THE QUESTIONs. And living into them. Something that was really freeing for me was that I don’t have to have the answers. Really…you just live into the questions and something will emerge.
Its all about inquiry…
What is possible?
Em thrives in complex messy situations and is comfortable in the unknown. Shes got trouble seeing things
Shes stuck in a world of possibility and believes in the goodness of humans.
She’s drawn to organizations that grow leaders by building the internal capacity of individuals and organizations to unleash potential. Both the adventure of harsh outdoor environments and the world of organizational development are ways she herself has experienced deep, meaningful challenge and personal growth.
There are an infinite of different mediums that can be harnessed to catalyze real leadership growth within individuals to drive compassionate action. How then, do we take these mediums and craft something irresistible? Unstoppable? Joyful? Compassion-ful?

Structure dictates behavior- what kinds of structures can we create so our values can drive the value we bring to the world…so we can really live into our passions and our authentic selves?

Where do we begin?
Well. Lets start at the beginning. CC was a transformational period in my life. I had never heard of Sustainability before coming here. Let alone organic. And I had definitely never known someone with dreadlocks…or smoked pot for that matter.
It was a real time for exploration.
Let me take you on a journey….
Active choice.
Pursuit of something you’re really interesting.
A GREAT START!
Collaborative process. Diversity. Many puzzle pieces.
IDM is a STRUCTURE that allows for growth and development of values…
This specific structure encourages creativity, leadership, self discipline, persistence, collaboration, looking at what really drives you through a whole different lense.
matters to you
Really curious about how we create structures and frameworks….
Kind of a misnomer
We don’t operate in a vaccum

four fellows come together virtually to discuss the lending portfolio. During these meetings, each fellow pitches their most promising potential borrower and everyone has the opportunity to ask tough questions. We’re encouraged to be tough with one another- what could go wrong? What is missing ? These meetings are the most public and high-level representations of the fellowship program and are the result of hours of reconnaissance, thought, and conversation.
Creative- creating something totally unique for you
Persuasive- because oyu have to convicne every single person in the deparmtnet that their major isnt good enough for you
Resourceful- what else exists out there? Who or what universities are already doing this?
Persistent- you might not get it the first time. People might tell you no. Victor turned me away the first time
Motivated- stay motivated and keep motivated.
Heart.

Well, actually for me, it was my major. Not really, but I tried at least twice to get it passed to be that. Instead, what manifested was environmental Anthrorpology. I took Walt Hecox’ class on Sustainable Development & the rest of history. I really loved Anthropology
EVERYTHING.
GO STRAIGHT FOR THE HEART and you can’t stop there.
Ownership is the name of the game, folks.
To drive, to press hard
We’ve designed for urgency. Remember Darcy Winslow talking about the power of ZERO?
BY FRAMING THE goal this way, and posing this, we require a totally different deisgn and a totally different solution
After college, you get expelled from paradise.
Things I am proud of what ive done from work, prior experience, and school.
In the past two years I have contributed to the growth of Social Venture Partners Portland joining the team at a key growth point, have successfully completed a masters program where I worked as a fellow with RSF Social Finance, and managed to find time to continue to work as an outdoor experiential educator at the Colorado Outward Bound School.
I thrive in challenge. Consistency.
A journey of leadership development & business design
Your responsibility to the people you are leading, rather than considering how your leadership position can enrich just you. This earns you the respect of your peers, your teachers, and the people you lead. This is a great approach to leadership, coupling sensitivity to the needs of the group with the vision of where you think the group should go. The Prefect speech was a clear statement of your approach to leadership of groups, and also (most importantly) of your commitment to leadership by caring for each member of the group, even (perhaps especially?) the neediest of those people. This is rare, and wonderful.
Try! Something! Anything!
My first learning was around jumping in. I chose Denver at first to live with my friends. I loved my friends. My dad was pissed. REAL JOBS come after college, Em. But community was a top priority for me. And then I asked myself, okay, if there was something Id do anyways, regardless of getting paid, what would it be?
Try.
A ship is safe in the harbor, but that’s not what ships are built for. OB taught me a lot of about importance of challenge & adventure. It taught me about the power of community. And the joy that comes from living into your values. Leadership…
Also. Every choice leads to another choice!!
Are lives are short, but our careers are long.
Commitment to joy and challenge.
Ive committed the majority of my vacation days to continue working as an experiential educator with Outward Bound - Self discovery through challenge and adventure.
Tenacity of pursuit.
Recongition that the only constant in our lives is change. !nity to explore. And live into the complexities of life. Try things on. Test, refine. Return.
Little moves. Big ecosystem. Whole is greater than the sum of its arts.
I thought I was goingt o be a psychologist.
Tried out outdoor instructor. Mental health professional for a while.
Wore a lot of different hats, but my core values were all the same. Motivated by essence. And then eventually they all map together.

Bringing values to life through social enterprise and catalyzing critical resources for positive impact. Enterprising curiousity.
We are here to help people to align their money with their values, to bring those values to life through social enterprise, and catalyze critical resources for positive impact.

What does it take to unleash potential? Deep courage. A daring commitment to action. Passionate leadership. An insatiable sense of urgency. Tenacity of pursuit. Through collaboration, transformation happens at the personal, collective, and whole systems level- no one can do it alone.
Join Social Venture Partners’ SPARK FARM to learn how potential is being unleashed in our community and beyond. You’ll meet our current nonprofit Investees and hear from Darcy Winslow, a local Portlander who has been leading movments of change for over 25 years.
Surround yourselef with the right people and you will thrive!
The big vision is to work as the director of the center for entrepreneurship and/or leadership at a college or university to inspire students to live into their potential as they grow their hearts and minds. Possible colleges/universities to look into: Lewis and Clark, Colorado College, Middlebury College, Macalester? California school systems? Master’s programs? International schools? The mountain school? Start with community colleges in Portland? Also, The Colorado Outward Bound School Professional chapter is in a serious period of transition. There is a need for a major strategic visioning as well as fresh commitment and hard work.
Grow my facilitation and education experience by: working as a TA with BGI (?), continue to work as an educator at the Colorado Outward Bound School, continue to do ad hoc consulting with small business entrepreneurs in the Portland area with Owl, Fox & Dean (and other possible collaborators- Meg O’Leary and Alexa P.
What is a teacher? I’ll tell you: it isn’t someone who teaches something, but someone who inspires the student to give of her best in order to discover what she already knows. -Paulo Coelho
I want to be in a position where I empower students, business leaders, mothers, and fathers, emerging leaders, to live into their strengths and challenge their mental models of what is important and what the world needs most. I want to be in a position where I can build in individuals a new conviction of life’s possibilities. I believe we must rouse ourselves and our communities and our world from complacency
How can I continue to empower social entrepreneurs and individuals to grow as leaders alongside their growing businesses and lives to drive compassionate action & lasting social change in our community and foster an ethic of ownership?
A High leverage intervention point is of course new Entrepreneurs (Leaders) who seek out challenges (primed for personal growth)
The main Focus is on building the capacity/share tools/engage in a dialogue with these folks & creates experiences together so they can continue to do the incredible work they’re doing!
There are a lot of different ideas here, but the common thread I see is in education and facilitation of transformative experiences for young and emerging leaders. Academic institutions are a clear channel to begin to lean into these gifts and corporations are also another channel that I have yet to explore.
