Primal religions are characterized by a pre-technological, holistic worldview where spirituality pervades all aspects of life. They rely on oral tradition rather than written texts and view time as cyclical rather than linear. Rituals are used to enact sacred myths and maintain harmony between the spiritual and physical world.
The document provides information about funeral traditions and practices in the Philippines. It discusses how Filipinos hold wakes called "lamay" where the cleaned and embalmed corpse is displayed. It describes the traditional dressing of deceased men and common casket decorations. It also details post-death mourning periods including a nine-day novena of prayers, a 40-day mourning period where family wears a black pin, and anniversary commemorations. The role of the embalmer in preparing bodies for viewing is highlighted.
There are two main cultural views of death - one where death ends all, and another where death is a natural part of life. Many cultures developed beliefs and rituals surrounding the afterlife, such as funerals to honor the deceased and ensure their safe journey. Rituals and representations of death vary widely between cultures but generally serve to commemorate the dead and acknowledge mortality.
Cultures are integrated and influenced by history, trade, and globalization. Anthropologists conduct fieldwork using naturalistic and participatory methods like observation, interviews, and cultural documentation to understand societies from an emic perspective. However, fieldwork presents ethical challenges regarding disturbing cultures, imposing outside values, and protecting community anonymity after publication. Inglés 3° medio - Death as a taboo (La muerte como un tabú) [SOLEMNE]
1. INGLÉS – TERCERCERO MEDIO
PRUEBA SOLEMNE, TEMA: TABÚ
2015
Hecho por: Yawahoo, Camila Valenzuela & Sebastián Rojas
Subido por Yawahoo
Agradecimientos: profesora Solange Gutiérrez
2. Introduction
To begin with, the meaning of taboo is “forbidden, not talked about” it is
something that is not mentioned, generally it makes people uncomfortable
when they talk about it.
Death is a taboo. A conversation about death is not comfortable, and it’s worse
when it is necessary to talk about with a child. Even more taboo is to talk about
one’s preparation for death, for something that is imminent.
3. Death is the end of the party, the end of the life.
In occident, we associate death with skulls, because that’s the part of the body
that remain longer. Normally, the skin and other tissues decay before the bones,
leaving the skeleton exposed. The bones has become a symbol of death.
Nobody is sure of what happens after dying, so people have to confront
something mysterious and unknown, and that’s why some persons are afraid of
death.
Death
4. Hanging coffins
In Philippines, the deads are hanged in their coffins, on a wall, on a cliff. Their
family believe that by this way, they are closer to Heaven.
In China, this way to place the deads, also gave protection from animals and
beasts.
5. Mummies
A mummy is a dead body, human or
animal that, by chemicals and the
extraction of the organs, is able to be
in good condition of preservation a
long time after death.
The process of mummification has been
used around the world as way to
memorialize, immortalize, and as religious
offerings.
The oldest intentionally prepared mummy
known to date are the Chinchorro mummies,
which were found in the Camarones Valley,
in Chile.
6. Cremation
Cremation is the combustion, vaporization and oxidation of dead bodies to basic
chemical compounds, such as gases, ashes and mineral fragments retaining the
appearance of dry bone.
In the north of India, people burn and throw their deads in the Ganges river.
Even though the water is way too polluted, Hindus believe that the river is
sacred, and it can clean the sins of the soul, and, when dying, it frees of the cycle
of reincarnation.
7. The day of the deads
The Día de Los Muertos is a celebration of the
death, from october 31st to november 2nd, in
Mexico. These days are designed by the
Catholic Church, to celebrate the memory of
All Hallows and of the Dead Faithfuls. This
holiday coincides with Halloween.
This is a special holiday, popular around the
world, because this is a happy and colorful
celebration of the death.
8.
9. Conclusion
Everybody has different ways to face death.
According to people’s beliefs, religion and culture.
However, sooner or later, we all die. This fact,
joined to that death is something unknown, it
makes people afraid and uncomfortable to talk
about it. That’s why death is a taboo.
