Pressure Vessel Selection Sizing and Troubleshooting Karl Kolmetz
Vessels are a vital part of the operational units in the process industries. A vessel is
a container in which materials are processed, treated, or stored. Without this type of
equipment, the process industries would be unable to create and store large
amounts of Product. Pressure vessels used in industry are leak-tight pressure
containers, usually cylindrical or spherical in shape, with different head
configurations.
The process engineer should have some knowledge of the mechanical design of
vessels. For example, the process engineer may have to make a preliminary design
of vessels for a cost estimate. A vessel consists of a cylindrical shell and end caps,
called heads. For safety, vessel design is governed by codes.
This document provides instructions for installing and setting up the Hybrid Application Toolkit (HAT) on Windows. It outlines prerequisites like Java JDK 8, Android SDK 24.4.1 or higher, Apache Ant 1.9.6, Node.js 5.4.1, Git client. It then provides step-by-step guides for installing each prerequisite, configuring environment variables, and installing additional tools like the SAP Kapsel Plugin, Git, Node.js, Cordova and Plugman. The goal is to prepare a development environment for building and deploying hybrid mobile apps with HAT.
Nanotechnology, ubiquitous computing and the internet of thingsKarlos Svoboda
The aim of this report is to provide a review of current developments in nanotechnology, ubiquitous
computing and what is increasingly being referred to as “domotics” – the integration of domestic architectures (domus) with information systems and devices (imformatics). The report will also provide a preliminary analysis of the potential impacts of these developments on the right to privacy and to data protection.
These areas of technological development represent the convergence of two domains of current research – nanoscience and distributed computing. Much of the existing literature suggests that advances in nanotechnology are likely to operate as a underlying suite of techniques that will enable the development of miniaturised and distributed information systems and the integration of informatics devices into a range of everyday consumer goods and household architectures. As we outline below the convergence of nanotechnology and research in ubiquitous and distributed systems is likely to result in the development of a range of new sensor technologies and advances in surveillance and monitoring techniques, deployed in civilian, military and security contexts. For these reasons advances in nanotechnology and ubiquitous computing are likely to intensify existing concerns associated with data collection and the right to privacy.
In order to provide some background to our review of these issues in this section of the report we outline definitions of the field and current trends in surveillance, data-mining and monitoring.
The document summarizes the 2012 eHealth Week conference held in Copenhagen from May 7-9. Over 2500 delegates attended the event, which featured a trade show with 96 exhibitors showcasing eHealth solutions. Cell Therapy Expansion and Challenges in Autoimmune DiseaseHealth Advances
There is increasing confidence that cell therapies will soon play a role in the treatment of autoimmune disorders, but the extent of this impact remains to be seen. Early readouts on autologous CAR-Ts in lupus are encouraging, but manufacturing and cost limitations are likely to restrict access to highly refractory patients. Allogeneic CAR-Ts have the potential to broaden access to earlier lines of treatment due to their inherent cost benefits, however they will need to demonstrate comparable or improved efficacy to established modalities.
In addition to infrastructure and capacity constraints, CAR-Ts face a very different risk-benefit dynamic in autoimmune compared to oncology, highlighting the need for tolerable therapies with low adverse event risk. CAR-NK and Treg-based therapies are also being developed in certain autoimmune disorders and may demonstrate favorable safety profiles. Several novel non-cell therapies such as bispecific antibodies, nanobodies, and RNAi drugs, may also offer future alternative competitive solutions with variable value propositions.
Widespread adoption of cell therapies will not only require strong efficacy and safety data, but also adapted pricing and access strategies. At oncology-based price points, CAR-Ts are unlikely to achieve broad market access in autoimmune disorders, with eligible patient populations that are potentially orders of magnitude greater than the number of currently addressable cancer patients. Developers have made strides towards reducing cell therapy COGS while improving manufacturing efficiency, but payors will inevitably restrict access until more sustainable pricing is achieved.
Despite these headwinds, industry leaders and investors remain confident that cell therapies are poised to address significant unmet need in patients suffering from autoimmune disorders. However, the extent of this impact on the treatment landscape remains to be seen, as the industry rapidly approaches an inflection point.

The leading trade show for medical technology points the way forward
Ten years ago, German companies working in the field of medical technology generated revenue
of approximately 5 billion euros. According to the estimates produced by UBM Canon, organiser
of the Medtec Europe trade show, (13-15 March 2012 in Stuttgart), this sum has now risen to
over 20 billion. Reflecting this dynamic growth, Medtec Europe has now also become Europe’s
leading trade show for medical technology.
Medtec was launched in 2002 when it welcomed approximately 100 exhibitors. Since then, the
medical technology trade show, which now goes by the name Medtec Europe, has grown by a
factor of ten to become the industry’s leading European event. What were the key factors
contributing to this success?
Clear subdivisions from March 13 to 15, 2012
The organisers always try to identify the key trends characterising the industry and incorporate
these as new areas of interest in the trade show. To design Medtec Europe in the clearest
possible way for exhibitors and visitors alike, they will subdivide the key topics into individual
areas in the future. In more concrete terms, this will result in the areas of:
10 er
11. MEDTEC Europe 2012
Medical Automation
Medical Cleanrooms
Medical Metals
Medical Packaging
Medical Plastics
Medical Rapid Manufacturing
Medical Testing
Medical IVD manufacturing.
More and more synergies
SüdTec and Designmed are two parallel events that will continue to be held in 2012. With
SüdTec, the organisers quite deliberately offer exhibitors from the general supply sector an
interface via which they can not only address their core markets but can also, almost as a ‘side
effect’, gain a foothold in the medical market and expand their customer base in this sector. As
far as DesignMed is concerned, this event is intended for a very specific group of electronics
designers operating in the medical technology sector. In this specialist area, UBM canon has also
been able to attract some top-quality speakers for the conference that accompanies the event.
New in 2012: IVD Manufacturing
IVD stands for in-vitro diagnostic medical devices and reflects developments in the “Clinical
Diagnostics” and “Life Science Research” sectors. In-vitro diagnostic medical devices are medical
products for the non-invasive examination of samples. By introducing the area of IVD
Manufacturing, UBM Canon is providing suppliers to the manufacturers of these analytical
devices and kits their first chance to promote their products at Medtec Europe.
For the first time in 2012: Medtec-Emdt Innovation Awards
The organisers will, for the very first time, be conferring the Medtec-EMDT Innovation Awards.
These will go to businesses that have distinguished themselves through outstanding
achievements in selected categories. Unfortunately it’s already too late to register (sorry about
this late information).

2.- Artículo de Peter Klingauf (K+K-PR GmbH) sobre el análisis general del evento:
Strong interest as ever in MEDTEC Europe
Demand for flexibility and resource-saving solutions
Strong interest from exhibitors and visitors in MEDTEC Europe 2012 shows no sign of abating –
which pleases Gregor Bischkopf, Event Manager for the organisers UBM Canon. The leading
European medical technology trade fair, which runs from 13th to 15th March in halls 2, 4, 6
and 8 of Messe Stuttgart, will update participants on which trends in medical device
manufacturing are viable and sustainable. The focus will be on developments that allow
designers of machinery and equipment to meet enhanced requirements for cleanliness and
precision, and on how cost pressures are forcing the whole process chain to work on resource-
saving solutions. Contacts with science and research will be as important as ever. The
Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPA will be offering solutions from the field of
orthopaedic research, specifically at the two-day MEDTEC symposium “Helpers for orthopaedic
and dental implant engineering”.
A study by the German Federal Ministry of Economics in 2011 entitled “Impetus for Innovation
in Healthcare” showed the medical device manufacturing sector boasting worldwide growth of
around 5 percent per annum. Market research companies like Espicom Business Intelligence
(EBI) have predicted average growth of 7.3 percent by 2014. In no other walk of life is the
march of technology welcomed more enthusiastically than in healthcare: a Forsa survey
reveals that more than 90% of Germans see progress in preventative care, diagnostics and
treatment as a positive development. The upshot is ever greater demands on precision and
quality in medical devices and implants - combined with high cost pressures.
MEDTEC Europe 2012, from 13th to 15th March 2012, will see innovative companies respond
to these trends by exhibiting the latest intelligent designs and applications in medical device
manufacturing. There will be strong representation from manufacturers of components like
pumps, tubes, motors, electronics and mechanical components, and from suppliers in the
mechanical and systems engineering industries. Event Manager Gregor Bischkopf summarizes:
“This year, MEDTEC Europe will once again provide the most comprehensive overview of every
kind of business involved in manufacturing medical devices and products.” These range from
raw materials suppliers and machine technology providers right through to parts, components
and OEMs.
The most rigorous standards of cleanliness and precision
It is no accident that plastics have always featured prominently at MEDTEC Europe. With the
right tools, almost anything can be made from plastics: petri dishes, syringes, tubes,
components, implants. Finished products in plastic must fulfil the most complex specifications,
and nowhere more so than in medical devices. It appears to be meeting those challenges since,
12 er
13. MEDTEC Europe 2012
according to the Association of German Engineers (VDI), more than half of all medical devices
manufactured worldwide are now made of plastic. Among the leading manufacturers of
injection-moulding machines who will be showcasing their expertise at MEDTEC Europe, Engel
Austria sees a clear trend towards the increased application of large electrical machines for
multi-component technologies. Their Head of Medical Division, Christoph Lhota, envisages the
increasing use of large, multi-cavity tools for making comparatively small components
requiring maximum precision, since medical technology, like other industries, will see growing
cost pressures leading to higher levels of integration. The Swiss company Netstal, which
specialises in high-precision injection moulding machinery, “is achieving higher output and
productivity with no loss of reproduction quality”, according to Adrian Landolt, Netstal’s Head
of Business Unit Medical Applications. Furthermore, says Landolt, their plastic components are
getting lighter and lighter, thus saving raw materials.
The growing demand for high quality medical devices with increasingly complex components
poses ever greater challenges to the industry. In the view of Hans Malinowski, Product
Manager at KraussMaffei, manufacturers of plastics processing machinery, the trends in
medical devices mirror general trends in plastics: “energy efficiency, cost pressures, flexibility”.
Dental machine is tops for user-friendliness
With demands on workpieces in manufacturing having to be met cost-effectively, machining
plays a very important role. At MEDTEC 2012 milling machine manufacturers Datron will
introduce two compact tools specifically designed and optimised for use in medical device
manufacturing. The Datron D5 is a 5-axis milling machine specially designed for dental
technology. On top of its technical features and favourable cost-performance ratio, this tool,
according to Erwin Sowa, Head of Marketing at the company based in Mühltal-Traisa near
Darmstadt, is distinguished by “a user-friendliness that would have been inconceivable not so
long ago” in this class of machine. Every tool function can be controlled with the touch-screen
operator interface of an iPad. This means high-performance milling machines can be operated
in laboratories without any previous experience.
Medical device manufacturing largely involves processing materials that are difficult to cut,
says Hans-Peter Notheisen of Willemin-Macodel. They make extra demands on the design of a
machine in terms of static and dynamic stiffness. At Stuttgart, Willemin-Macodel will introduce
its 508MT machining centre: a high-performance milling centre for processing complex and
high-precision components in a single cycle. Complete machining is a high priority for the Swiss
company’s customers, whereby “flexibility and diversity are much more important than simply
producing large batch sizes“, says Peter Notheisen, the Managing Director for Germany.
Demands for quality, performance and precision have steadily increased in recent years. His
company, from the cradle of precision engineering, has anticipated this trend, says Notheisen,
and “has met the challenge with new, innovative machining solutions“. Medical devices like
13 er
14. MEDTEC Europe 2012
hip and knee joints are ground, milled, smoothed and polished by machine tools. Without
them, further part machining would be impossible.
Discussing medical needs and technical problems
A two-day MEDTEC symposium - “Helpers for orthopaedic and dental implant engineering” –
offered by the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology and Automation IPA, provides
an opportunity to discuss customisation in implant production with a panel of experts. The
Institute sees its role as one of liaising between research and industrial application. Another
reason why, as UBM Event Manager Gregor Bischkopf emphasizes, “the Fraunhofer IPA has
been for some years now an important partner for MEDTEC Europe”.
Many things that were inconceivable until recently have now been made possible by
significant advances in treatment methods, which reduce pain and discomfort and ensure
better mobility and quality of life. It is now possible, with the highest standards of medical
technology and expertise, to treat many common bone and joint conditions. But such
treatments have to be affordable, so scientists are intensifying their search for solutions that
combine cost-efficiency with the highest quality and optimum benefit for the patient. The
Fraunhofer Institute IPA is at the forefront of research and development in this field.
Fraunhofer experts will be presenting their latest findings at MEDTEC, as a forum providing
opportunities for intensive debate about technology, trends and visions for the future.
According to Gregor Bischkopf, this transfer of knowledge and expertise between business and
science is one of the features of MEDTEC by which exhibitors and visitors set great store.
Dr. Urs Schneider, Head of Orthopaedics and Motion Systems at the Fraunhofer Institute in
Stuttgart, will introduce the new Virtual Orthopedic Lab. MEDTEC 2012 will thus play host to
the relatively new discipline of computer-based biomechanics, designed to assist biomedical
companies in research, science and application. The Lab, run by Dr. Schneider’s department at
the Institute, is largely designed to support the work of product development engineers. It is
developing a simulation-based workflow for product engineering and testing in orthopaedics.
Up to now there have been countless stand-alone solutions for planning tools in orthopaedics
that struggle to meet the increasing challenges.
The medical technology industry will be meeting en masse at Messe Stuttgart to identify
trends, exchange information and maintain its contacts with science. The Stuttgart location is
perfect, explains Gregor Bischkopf, “because it is the powerhouse of Europe for manufacturing
in general, and medical device manufacturing in particular”.
