PATTACHITRA
 The word Patachitra is actually made up of two
Sanskrit words that are
Pata and chitra.
Pata means a piece of paper,
while Chitra means a portrait.
The colors used in the creation of these paintings
are derived mainly from the plant extracts.
PATTACHITRA
 Traditional Art form of Orissa & West
Bengal,over1000yrs old.
 Cloth based Scroll Painting and Natural Colors are
used.
 Pencil or Charcoal are NOT used.
 Famous places- Odisha,Puri,Raghurajpur
 Given GI Tag in 2008.
 Influenced by Jagannath & Vaishnava Cult.
 Palm leaves are used for painting- Talapattachitra

1) Processing of Canvas.
2) Making of Color.(ancient & traditional
methods)
3) Colors mixed in Dry Coconut Shells. 4)
Drawing of the Borders.
4) Outlining the figures.
5) Coloring the figures.
6) Outlining with Black color.

 Traditionally Pattachitra were made to offer to
Lord Jagganth temple as in seva (Services) from
pilgrims
 but today, it is used to produce whole range of
products like saris, dupattas (stoles), bed sheets,
cushion, dress material etc. to fulfil the
household demand for which tussar and mill
cotton cloth is used.
Sayera Chitrakar
Sayera Chitrakar is one of the leading
Patachitra artists, belongs to Chandipur
village in East Medinipur a district of
West Bengal. Sayera, being one of the
most skillful and renowned Patachitra
artists, has exhibited her paintings and
participated with Pater Gaan at various
places in India including Delhi, Mumbai,
Chennai, Goa & Kashmir.
Swarna Chitrakar
Swarna Chitrakar is a traditional scroll
painter from the eastern Indian state of
West Bengal. Over the last two decades,
she has been critically acclaimed across
India and abroad. Till the summer of
2018, Swarna had visited the US five
times and the UK twice, apart from
France, Italy, Germany and Sweden to
showcase her art skills, to collaborate
with artists and to participate in
residency programs
Anwar Chitrakar
Anwar Chitrakar was awarded by the
Rabindra Bharati University, the
Tourism Department of Delhi and has
won a National Award in 2006.
Rupsona Chitrakar
Rupsona Chitrakar paints on
mythological themes and works on
apparels as well. She is an expert in
painting on tribal themes.
