Legacy carriers American, Delta, and United are often viewed as the dinosaurs of the industry.
They are saddled with huge operating costs and fleets that have different types of aircrafts, which
means they are slower to implement changes.
But changes are happening. All three (Delta especially) are aggressively upgrading their planes
with Wi-Fi, advanced video-on-demand systems, streaming content, and power outlets, as well

haphazard (you never really know which plane actually has Wi-Fi, for example), and rollout will
last into next year (and beyond), but the legacy carriers definitely deserve some praise, after

Commercial Aviation - In Flight Entertainment and Communication Market.pdfAviationandDefensema
In-flight entertainment is the term for the creation and development of entertainment systems for passengers aboard airplanes (IFE). IFE, or in-flight entertainment, is a selection of educational and entertaining materials that are shown on a high-definition screen for the benefit of passengers during lengthy journeys.

The document discusses airborne internet, which aims to provide broadband internet access from aircraft flying at high altitudes rather than from satellites. It would work by having aircraft equipped with wireless networking equipment circling overhead to relay data. This could provide internet access to more remote areas at faster speeds than satellite internet, while being cheaper to implement than launching satellites. The document covers the history of the concept and discusses companies working on implementation using planes, blimps, and other aircraft to deliver airborne internet access to users on the ground.
Airborne Internet aims to provide high-speed wireless internet connectivity by placing aircraft in fixed flight paths overhead of hundreds of cities. The network would deliver speeds of around 25Mbps for business and 5Mbps for homes using aircraft flying at 51,000 feet. The Airborne Internet Consortium is a nonprofit that develops open standards for digital aviation communications over this airborne network, called HALO. Key applications include air traffic control tracking, in-flight monitoring, and providing internet access to passengers in aircraft.
The state of in-flight wifi in United StatesRafat Ali
This document analyzes inflight Wi-Fi availability on US and international flights based on data from Routehappy. It finds that flyers can now expect Wi-Fi on 38% of domestic US flights, with Delta, Southwest, and US Airways having the most flights equipped. Virgin America and AirTran stand out for offering Wi-Fi consistently on 100% of their fleets. International Wi-Fi is also expanding, with 38 daily international flights from the US offering full-flight access.
The document discusses proposals for an airborne internet network that would use aircraft flying at high altitudes to broadcast wireless internet signals over large areas. It would function similarly to satellite internet but with lower latency. Several companies have proposed networks using different types of aircraft from lightweight planes to blimps and solar-powered drones. The aircraft would carry networking equipment and broadcast signals to antennas on homes and businesses, overcoming limitations of land-based internet infrastructure. The airborne internet is meant to complement rather than replace existing internet options. One network called HALO would use a specially designed plane called Proteus that could stay aloft for 18 hours while broadcasting internet over a 75 mile area.
JetBlue was founded in 1999 with a mission to bring humanity back to air travel. It announced plans for live TV on all flights and had its first flight in 2000. Over the next several years it grew rapidly, adding amenities like more legroom and launching programs like TrueBlue rewards. By the mid-2000s it had over 100 planes and was offering services like in-flight WiFi not found with other US airlines. As it grew, it focused on aspects like safety, customer service and low fares to remain competitive in the mature airline industry.
Air Transport evolution by Luis S FranciscoLuis Francisco
This document discusses the evolution of air transport and technologies over time, from the early days of air travel to modern innovations. It covers the development of reservation systems, global distribution systems (GDS), direct sales, and how the internet has impacted the airline industry and distribution of travel products. Key topics include the emergence of computerized reservation systems in the 1960s/70s, the rise of major GDS providers in the 1980s, direct sales by airlines in the 1990s, and how alliances and quality carriers have helped airlines survive competitive pressures.
The document discusses the concept of an "Airborne Internet" which would provide broadband connectivity between aircraft and ground networks. It originated from NASA's Small Aircraft Transportation System program, which needed a robust communications channel between aircraft. This concept envisions aircraft being connected in a peer-to-peer network using broadband radios, analogous to how computers are connected on networks. Implementing an Airborne Internet could enable greater capabilities for air transportation systems and open up new operating models for the industry.
This document discusses OneWeb, a company that aims to provide global internet access through a constellation of low Earth orbit satellites. It summarizes OneWeb's value proposition of delivering high-speed, low latency internet access globally using satellites. The document outlines key aspects of OneWeb's system including the planned satellite constellation, low-cost satellite production, planned ground infrastructure including gateways, and user terminal equipment. It also discusses various market applications that OneWeb's system could serve such as enterprise/small business, consumer, government, cellular backhaul, and more.
Air transport evolution 2011 by Luis FranciscoLuis Francisco
This document discusses the evolution of air transport and technology from the 1960s to present day. It covers the development of computer reservation systems (CRS) by airlines in the 1960s-1970s and the rise of global distribution systems (GDS) like Galileo, Worldspan, and Amadeus in the 1980s. It also discusses how the internet led to direct sales by airlines on their websites, challenging the traditional role of travel agencies. Finally, it contrasts the low-cost carrier model with airlines that have adopted a "healthy quality" approach with luxury amenities on long-haul flights.
The document discusses emerging trends in technology including the growth of blogging and mobile internet access. It describes how technologies are converging to allow media consumption anywhere through devices like smartphones, tablets, and streaming services. New applications of technologies like digital cameras, WiFi, and Bluetooth in mobile devices are changing how people access content and share media.
The Boeing Company provides an overview of its organization, leadership, core competencies, and situation analysis. It discusses its two main business segments, corporate functions, mission and values. Boeing also summarizes its Connexion in-flight internet service, including its high costs, low usage rates, and marketing mistakes. It finds that Connexion's $500,000+ installation costs per plane and lack of customers led to huge losses despite over $1 billion invested over 6 years. Recommendations include smarter market research, understanding airlines as gatekeepers not customers, and accessibility to gain network effects.

Digital Banking in the Cloud: How Citizens Bank Unlocked Their MainframePrecisely
Inconsistent user experience and siloed data, high costs, and changing customer expectations – Citizens Bank was experiencing these challenges while it was attempting to deliver a superior digital banking experience for its clients. Its core banking applications run on the mainframe and Citizens was using legacy utilities to get the critical mainframe data to feed customer-facing channels, like call centers, web, and mobile. Ultimately, this led to higher operating costs (MIPS), delayed response times, and longer time to market.
Ever-changing customer expectations demand more modern digital experiences, and the bank needed to find a solution that could provide real-time data to its customer channels with low latency and operating costs. Join this session to learn how Citizens is leveraging Precisely to replicate mainframe data to its customer channels and deliver on their “modern digital bank” experiences.
