This document contains 14 photos taken to represent different themes: loneliness, wealth, friendship, fear, danger, weakness, strength, desire, love, greed, poverty, and purity. For each theme, a brief 1-2 sentence description is given for the photo and how it relates to the theme. The photos depict situations like a man sitting alone to represent loneliness, a cash machine for wealth, two friends laughing together for friendship, and a bench for poverty.
Shown within this powerpoint is how my media product represents particular social groups. I have discussed and evaluated my film opening to be able to consider the issues involved.
The NZQA static images exemplars as a ppt. Includes: images, moderators' comments and student explanations of their image (2 exemplars for each grade boundary).
Baylee,In Katherine Mansfields story Miss Brill, the author u.docxgarnerangelika
Baylee,
In Katherine Mansfield's story "Miss Brill", the author uses the theme of loneliness to exemplify the pain loneliness comes with. She uses a public scenery in the park to lead the protagonist, Miss Brim, to realize what her loneliness has caused her to do. She felt embarrassed for going to the park everyday to watch the other people. The tone comes across as very sad and lonely, and it gives us an inside look on the life of a lonely elderly old woman. The story in itself is sad. Nothing about an old woman who is so lonely watching other people for entertainment is happy whatsoever. However, Brim uses the characterization and description of events to show us the pain and despair of how having seemingly no-one can affect a person. The line, "What has been happening to me? said her little sad eyes," (259) shows us that you can even see the effects of her loneliness even physically. She has noticed what she has been doing and it lead her to see herself in a different way, as well as the people around her.
Courtney,
In Raymond Carver's short story "Popular Mechanics", he introduces a sense of separation between a mother and her spouse which reflects in the authors use of tone in this story. The tone in the beginning starts off a little bit on edge as she goes through frustration, which is later developed to an disagreement. The situation becomes more hostile towards the middle of the story. The narrator mentioned " Son of a bitch! I'm so glad you're leaving! She began to cry. You can't even look me in the face, can you" (277)? This moment basically describes a moment of sadness for this women as she goes through a moment of separation from her significant other. In her sense, this could also be a use of diction because she tells him to leave but cries afterwards as if she doesn't really mean for him to leave, she is just upset. The tone the narrator uses in this story is major hostile disagreements between our characters. Later the narrator developed a statement, "I want the baby, he said. Are you crazy? No, but I want the baby. I'll get someone to come by for his things" (277). This statement proves that our characters continues to disagree with each other as they begin to debate on who will get custody for their child. As they debate and tried to resolve a solution, this will later be in effect of the resolution of the story.

2. LONELINESS
We shot this picture for the
theme of loneliness because
it shows a guy sitting on his
own with his head in his
hands.
3. WEALTH
We shot this picture to
represent wealth, as cash
machines are used only to
take money out or view your
balance.
4. FRIENDSHIP
This picture was taken on
accident and as a joke, but
we realised it signified
friendship. This picture is
of me and one of my closest
friends Maia. I think it
works well for this theme
since we are both laughing
and did not know how it would
eventually turn out.
5. FEAR
We shot this picture to
represent fear as students
often find exams scary and
stressful. The fact some of
the text on this sign is in
capital letters shows there
is something to be cautious
of as capital letters are
used on important signs.
6. DANGER
This picture signifies danger
because it has three different
signs showing there is danger.
We actually found this quite
amusing because there only
really needed to be one.
7. WEAKNESS We took a photo of this
poster to show weakness as
this man had suffered
domestic abuse. I think that
this shows weakness because
of how weak he had been to
not walk away while it was
happening but he is now a
strong and free man as he has
left those horrible
situations. If anything, the
weakness here is whoever his
abuser was.
8. STRENGTH We chose this as our picture
for the theme of strength as
it is a mannequin who has the
‘ideal’ body type. It is very
athletic and built but the we
felt that strength is often
something that comes from
within, therefore this
mannequin lacks it as it is
simply an object.
9. DESIRE
This picture was taken also as
a joke, but now I realise that
chocolate itself is an
aphrodisiac so it is quite
literally desire.
10. LOVE
This photo portrays love as
everyone in my group loves
to read, yet these books
are about cinematography
and photography.
11. GREED
This photo shows greed as
someone can be greedy in many
different ways, such as
money, food or even emotions.
12. POVERTY
We chose to use a bench in
our picture to represent
poverty as many homeless
people set up their lives on
them. They sleep and pretty
much live on this basic
object that we all take for
granted.
13. PURITY
We chose to use a white car
from the car park for this
photo as it was a pure
white. White is often
associated with purity so it
fit well.
