INDIRECT REQUESTS

 Declarative sentences such as you shoudn’t, you should, you
 must, more easily than the child understands interrogative
 sentences.

 For example, shoudnt you, should you, or must you?


 An adult says to a child on a rainy day says,”shouldn’t you put on
 some boots” => this is a negative form but the action is postive
INDIRECT REQUESTS

The child first produces indirect request during the preschool years

Comparing the indirect requests with direct requests increases between
3 and 5 years (Garvey, 1975).

Two simple rules that children use when using nonstandard forms
of indirect request based on:
1. Briefness
2. Cleverness of avoid appearing demanding (Ervin-Tripp &
    Gordon, 1986)
