Typoday 2016: Presentation by Pooja Saxena and Subhashish PanigrahiSubhashish Panigrahi
The document summarizes efforts to develop Ol Chiki, a writing script for the Santali language. It discusses how Santali was previously an oral language but missionary Jeremiah Phillips created primers in the 1800s. Pandit Raghunath Murmu then developed the Ol Chiki script in the 1920s-1940s to properly represent Santali vowels and sounds. In 2008, Ol Chiki was added to the Unicode standard. The document outlines ongoing work to develop Ol Chiki fonts, keyboard layouts, and help people learn the script.

This document provides an overview of key concepts in digital pedagogy presented by Rebecca Frost Davis at the Austin College Digital Humanities Colloquium in 2013. It defines digital humanities as learning about, with, and through technology. It discusses how the globally networked world, increased data and computing power, and participatory culture are impacting education. Examples are provided of digital humanities collaborations between students and faculty, such as a history project transcribing archives and a computing and literature team-taught course. Keywords for digital pedagogy are suggested, such as collaboration, community, failure, play, praxis, and public. The format of a digital pedagogy reader is outlined.
The document discusses the National Digital Library Program (NDLP) in Pakistan. It provides the following key points:
1. The NDLP is a flagship program of the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan that provides online resources to over 250 public and private institutions through subscriptions with INASP.
2. A digital library provides networked access to digital materials like text, images, video and data, with search features to support research and teaching while ensuring long-term preservation.
3. The NDLP provides access to 31 databases with over 25,000 full-text journals and over 50,000 e-books from 220 publishers to beneficiary institutions in Pakistan.

Rethinking literacy through transmedia storytellingCathie Howe
This document summarizes a presentation about rethinking literacy through transmedia storytelling. It discusses how transmedia storytelling enhances engagement by telling stories across multiple media platforms and allowing for audience participation. Examples are provided of transmedia storytelling projects done with students, and guidelines are offered for implementing transmedia projects in the classroom. Resources and tools for creating transmedia stories are also listed.
Transmedia storytelling enhances a central story idea through various components across multiple media platforms. It allows audiences to play a meaningful role by contributing to and participating in the unfolding story. Transmedia incorporates participatory culture and blurs the relationship between creators and audiences, who now co-produce and interpret the storyworld. Implementing transmedia in schools engages learners and allows learning beyond and through real life settings. Examples of transmedia components and tools were provided.
EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES IN TEACHING AND LEARNINGSiti Jabar
This document discusses how networked learning environments are transforming education through personalized and social learning opportunities. It provides examples of social networking tools, online language learning communities, virtual tutoring services, and other digital resources that allow learners to connect, participate, and learn at their own pace. The focus is on creating a more personalized, interactive, and collaborative model of education through technology and online networks.
Giving New Life to Old Tamil Little Magazines Through DigitizationShrinivasan T
Kaniyam Foundation is digitizing old Tamil little magazines to preserve them and provide open access. They have started identifying, cataloging and scanning magazines from 1970-1980, targeting 500 issues within a year. Metadata is being created bilingually according to Dublin Core standards. Scanning is done at high resolution and files are processed using OCR software before being made freely available online. The goal is to archive these historical publications for their cultural and linguistic value since many were short-lived. Copyright clearance will be pursued where possible for open access release.
Digital Libraries: the process, initiatives and developmental issues in India...Sudesh Sood
This document summarizes digital library initiatives and development issues in India. It discusses objectives of digital libraries like enhancing collections, using standards, and maximizing access. It outlines workflows for content selection, publishing, and delivery. Key metadata standards and protocols used in India include Dublin Core and OAI-PMH. Popular open source digital library software in India includes Greenstone, DSpace, and EPrints. The document then summarizes several digital repositories, open courseware initiatives, open access journals, and metadata harvesting services in India. It concludes by noting both accomplishments and ongoing issues around infrastructure, skills, and copyright that impact digital library development in India.
Digitization of Documentary Heritage Collections in Indic Language: Comparati...Anup Kumar Das
This document provides an overview of five major digital library initiatives in India that aim to preserve culturally and linguistically diverse documentary heritage collections. Social Aspects & Creation of Digital LibrariesArun VR
The presentation includes social aspects in creating digital libraries and my view of creating digital libraries using DSpace, an open source digital repository software
This document discusses how technologies can foster creativity. It defines creativity as creating something novel and valuable by transcending traditional ideas and rules. Creativity is important for dealing with today's complex world. Social and participatory media can promote creativity by enabling new forms of discourse, collaboration, and knowledge sharing. Technologies allow promoting creativity through open practices, aggregation and scale, and creative learning, teaching, research, and use of open educational resources.
This document discusses the evolving definition of literacy and how digital technologies can support literacy development and multiliteracies. Literacy now involves mastery of various language modes including reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing, and creating across traditional and digital texts. Technologies can enrich expression and communication through multimodal texts, new language and culture, and enable writing, modeling, visualizing, and presenting to develop creative and critical literacies.
Creation of Digital Libraries using Open Source SoftwareArun VR
The document discusses social aspects and creation of digital libraries. Digital libraries make resources available in machine-readable formats over computer networks, providing equal access to information. They offer advantages like long-term preservation, more space, and full-text search. Social aspects include supporting diverse communities, addressing the digital divide, and preserving intellectual assets. Open source software like DSpace, Greenstone, and E-Prints allow building digital libraries. DSpace is commonly used open source repository software that supports customization and storing any digital content. The concluding remarks emphasize how digitization preserves endangered library items and connects the past to the future.
This document outlines six strands of an ICT curriculum for schools: 1) access to resources through websites and courses, 2) communication and collaboration tools, 3) audio/video content development and editing software, 4) e-conferences and webinars, 5) free and open source software, and 6) integrating ICT into all spheres of learning. It provides examples of specific online resources, tools, and activities that can be used for each strand. The document also lists seven objectives for teachers and challenges to integrating ICT into the curriculum.
Digital Humanities in Academic Libraries - Sandra CowanSandra Cowan
Digital Humanities (DH) is an interdisciplinary area that uses digital resources and computing technologies to ask humanistic questions. It has grown rapidly in academic libraries which increasingly take a proactive role in supporting and collaborating on DH through services like digitization, tool development, and establishing DH centers. While some libraries take a reactive, service-oriented approach, others see DH as an opportunity for libraries and librarians to become equal collaborators and scholars through initiatives like dedicated DH librarian positions and institutional support of digital scholarship.
